The impression I had and have is a bunch of old guys sitting around smoking and drinking cheap booze in a dark room. When the young guys don't join, that's what you're left with.
I do think, though, that the drop in membership just reflects the fact that people don't join clubs in general anymore. You see the same aging membership in the Rotary, the Kiwanis, the Lions Club, the Moose, the Elks etc..
I think they are all destined to die out, which is really a shame, but, then, I never joined any of them, either.

I was eligible due to kind of a fluke thing (I was in-theatre, navy, during the Grenada deal)...so, while I didn't really think I deserved to be there with the real war-fighters, I figured what the heck - I spent years at sea and can at least talk the talk. Besides, I wanted to see what the VFW was all about.
Come to find out it was basically a bunch of old guys sitting around smoking and drinking cheap booze in a dark room :)
