In a letter to local United Way chapters across the country, Brian A. Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way World Wide, urges the local offices to join with local labor councils and state federations as they mobilize for the AFL-CIO’s America Wants to Work campaign.
He notes that unemployment is at 9 percent and 46 million people in the United States are living in poverty and says, “These figures point to an eroding middle class and a lower standard of living for millions of families across the country.”
The AFL-CIO is working to address America’s jobs crisis with their national mobilization effort, America Wants to Work jobs campaign. Like us, the AFL-CIO America Wants to Work jobs campaign supports the infrastructure bank, workforce training and extension of unemployment supports. We are working together toward the same goal of creating a better life for everyone.
He also says that since 1946, the AFL-CIO and the United Way have worked together to provide “services to members of organized labor, their families and their communities. At the same time, the AFL-CIO and its members have been among our strongest supporters.”
I urge you to engage with your state and local labor councils and consider where the work of your United Way aligns with the America Wants to Work campaign. Please support your AFL-CIO as they have supported our work in communities across the nation for the last 60 years.
The United Way has been a leftist organization for a very long. Some employers mandate that their workers contribute. I donate to Samaritan’s Purse.
I give to the UW only to support the Boy Scouts. /hurling vomit sarcasm
Yeah, I have had 11 years of the attempted smear campaign of any one who doesn't donate...
You may as well give to the DNC as to give to UW.
Salvation Army at least has a noble cause.
Sounds like what the Feds have been doing for many years.
United Way donates to Planned Parenthood.
After they take their sizable chunk, they decide what happens to the rest of your cash. They might give it to an organization you approve of. They might give it to an organization you do not approve of. Their decisions may be influenced by outside organizations, like the AFL-CIO.
I have several organizations I donate to. And I donate directly. No middleman making decisions I may not approve of.
Same with politicians. I don't need the RNC deciding what to do with my money. (They might decide to give some of it to Linda Graham :)
Another one for the boycott list.
I give to local food bank and women’s shelter. Never give money to organizations that redistribute the cash to other countries. I don’t care how bad off they are.

There was a post of an article about a soon-to-be alumna of Dartmouth that declined to donate to the graduating class donation.
She was openly singled out, and came under public pressure from her classmates because of a matching gift challenge, if all donate.
May have even been in the school paper, but definitely in the school's social media clique.
I'm pretty sure Dartmouth had to step in, since it started bordering on harassment. That, and the bad national publicity it was generating.
I really didn't like the UW after I saw what the salaries were, and then cutting off the Boy Scouts, amongst other practices.
Me too.. I work for a very large utility company and they try to force United Way down our throats every year. I have refused to donate.
Its set-up made it easily corrupted, "united" to mix their enemies colors with their own and its decisions on where to allocate funds used to hold groups and donors hostage, in addition to being made by an elite. (Its premise is collective.)
By now, through a concerted effort, the entire Non-Governmental Organization concept, part and parcel, has been subverted.
"Here's yer sign."
Now "The United Way" turns outward on its contribution network, trying to compel assistance with the Trumkaists.
To hell with them.
Look for a frightened operator of your local animal shelter or a distracted, perhaps irritated volunteer at your local fire house to hit you up for joining them in handing out pamphlets. If you refuse you become "the problem" standing between them and their funding, in some cases standing between them and feeding their families.
Don't wait for someone "older and wiser" or better connected to draw the line for you. Damn the consequences. Your passion expressed when drawing a line in such a situation forces the issue back into their corner. A simple "hell no" is enough. Make them do their own research. Don't explain.
And make a similar principled stink with regard to "combined campaigns" at the "workplace."
Oh, and giving aid, in any fashion, to those at the heart of this "deflationary cycle" if you're unemployed is counter productive. If your free labor is on the market, priced below the return on 90-day Treasury Bills, start by volunteering in aid of your most immediate neighbor (starting with yourself, then your own household, your very nearest neighbors, before finding "meaning" in the animal shelter) and then work outward.
Yes it is. I recognized it as a malignant umbrella organization back in the late ‘70s, and was nearly fired from a job because I refused to ‘donate’ to them. The store wanted some kind of 100% donation brownie button from them. I detest United Way, have never voluntarily given them as much as a penny and never will.

Your disgust at UW is well justified. Especially what happened over there with this guy at the helm.
