Come to think of it, there aren't too many houses that need a 1 MW plant. You would install one for a bunch of houses. Then you either distribute hot water to houses (this is often used in cold climate) or you generate electric energy from the steam. The cost of the plant would be shared, and will be less than a bunch of amaller, 5 kW units (which can't be used to generate steam anyway, they aren't allowed to run hot enough for that.)

Come to think of it, there aren't too many houses that need a 1 MW plant. Ooops. Houses, no. Apartment buildings, hotels, office buildings, yes.
There are also district heating systems (Manhattan, NY has one) where steam is distributed through underground pipes from a central plant to individual buildings. If it can reliably deliver mild steam cheaply, it still would be damn useful.
