Except for one thing, hes never lost an election.
In the primaries, in 2002 he had no Republican competitors, in 2006 his biggest competitor was a Texas secessionist who didn't even crack 10% of the vote, and in 2010, his biggest competitor was Kay Bailey Hutchison who phoned in her campaign for the most part and who was relying on advertising to put her over the top.
In the general elections, in 2002 he faced a Democrat who had already been gutted and cleaned by another Democrat in their primary, in 2006 he faced a clown car of candidates that allowed him to run away with 39% of the vote, and in 2010 he faced a Clinton insider that he was able to avoid debating.
These did not prepare him for a truly hostile media and for going up against several other Republicans who are prepared to go toe-to-toe with him on a near-daily basis.
For those who say that his debate performances don't matter, they should explain exactly why they think he has dropped since his first debate.
You have to be able to walk into the lion's den (in front of the media), you have to stare the lion down and you have to explain what you believe and why you believe it, and you have to explain why you think Conservatives should be the ones governing. You can't do it from a script either.
