Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.
The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.
But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.
One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Did you see the video of him in front of his house talking to the students? He was loving every minute of it. The dude's brain don't work right.
I don’t follow college football but I’m intimately aware of its aggressive and protective culture and this, sadly, doesn’t surprise me.
(Earlier this year, after all efforts to curb or abate the disturbing, disgusting and increasing game-day tailgating illegalities failed, I finally had to sell and move away from the yearly hell that Vanderbilt football brought to my otherwise perfect but too-damn-close-to-campus home. But that was nothing compared to what these troubled boys were dealt.)
Sandusky “retired” shortly after being investigated by the local police in 1998 - in a town of 20,000 or so people I doubt the men at the university did not know about this investigation where he admitted to showering with the boys. I believe we will learn he was told to “retire”
I learned tonight that “scapegoat” means letting little kids get raped in the shower.
Go read the grand jury investigation, jackass. Or are you still lighting candles around your statue of Paterno?
To cover up something, you need to know about it.
There is zero information to suggest that Paterno sat on any information about anything - after a three year grand jury investigation, not some weekend brainstorm.
Thanks for voicing my opinion. I'm let down by the number of "conservatives" who value cheering for a team over basic human rights and dignity.
While I'm an absolute believer that sports is a good way for everybody to learn solid life skills - ones that play right into conservative philosophy - it is now as clear as a nuclear fireball just how unbelievably poisonous the whole collegiate big-sports atmosphere has become.
I’m soooo sorry your precious coach of a GAME was fired. I mean, how dare they right? Clearly that precious football program and Paterno’s friend and employee is more valuable then the children RAPED.
Why don’t you get your facts straight. He was told by the grad student what happened. there was a report made against Sandusky earlier. Once could be explained away but twice establishes a pattern. he and everyone at that university did the bare minimum required not even bothering to find the identity of the child the grad student witnessed raped. Sandusky suddenly retired early, but “JoePa” had no idea...right? A guy rumored to replace him as coach up and leaves in middle age and what...Paterno never knew why? he never knew Sandusky was restricted from bringing children to campus? Give me an eternal break.
Apparently you just woke up from a seven day nap.
I would like to give you details but you can go get them yourself.
Bottom line, the whole university up to the president, county officials, pubic school officials, county DA, on and on were covering up for a sex-ring. More heads will roll.
Your feelings mirror mine. Shut it down, fire everybody and start over next year. Let the players get out of there and go somewhere else to start over without restriction from the NCAA. If you were one of those kids, would you want to go to Columbus and Madison the next two weeks? What bowl game would want to host PSU after what is the worst sports scandal that I can remember in my lifetime?
I can honestly say that this is the first time since I was a little kid that I don’t really want to watch the Huskers. I get sick to my stomach everytime I think about the game on Saturday. I think it will at best be a bizarre spectacle and at worst a horrible debacle. I feel terrible for these 20 year old kids on both teams who have to be absolutely dreading having to participate in this thing.
My heart goes out to the PSU fans out there. As a guy who grew up and still lives proudly in a state where life revolves around football, I can’t imagine the heartbreak of the folks in western PA and around the country who, I understand, love the Nittany Lions like we love the Big Red here in Huskerland. I know I would be devastated.
Just a little side note, Graham Spanier, or “Grammy Spammy” as we used to call him, signed my diploma. Yikes.
Generally Free rebublic has not in the past put up with people defending serial pedophelia to the degree to which you are engaging on this thread, Teacher317. In spite of the grand jury testimony and the previous investigations and the revelations that keep coming.
No matter how long you have been on the site
GTFO. He enabled a RAPIST! He KNEW about 1998, he KNEW about 2000, he KNEW about 2002. Are you suggesting that the grad assistant made a special visit to Paterno’s home on a Sunday to give only a vague description of what he saw? That self-centered wretch cared more about his legacy than the 10 year old who was being raped so hard that McQueary could hear the skin slapping together from beyond the shower!!! I wasn’t aware that advocating the firing of a pedophile’s enabler was “politically correct.” What’s is wrong with you?
Oh, and by the way, 2 national championships in 46 years does not qualify someone as “one of the best coaches in history.” That would get his sorry ass fired from many schools.
Yes he is. Well put.
Hey, I know, let’s get a bunch of moron athletes to come to college and play games. We can fake their grades and buy them cars and girls, and they can become coaches if they don’t go pro. Every beer drinking sycophant for 200 miles will come to our school. What could possibly go wrong?
We need to start discriminating the idiots not deserving of an education past grade six, from those who can actually learn.
It appears that it was the same DA. His nephew claims that DA Gricar “didn’t have enough evidence to prosecute” in 1998.

If one of these children were mine, Sanudsky would have never raped another boy again. He would have received the full Lorena Bobbitt treatment.
Thank goodness you stood up for your friend. Only a few seem to get someone on their side. I hope one day you are abe to find her. And I hope you find her well. Back then things were hushed up and glossed over even more so than now. You did the right thing.
The release is catharctic. :^)
I just don’t see how that game can go on now.
