Okay everyone...approaching 2:00pm Eastern...ready for the "Big EAS Test"?
Yes, and I don’t see why they need to waste resources on this anyway, since the locals do this and do it pretty well. I don’t know what kind of emergency they need to do this for.
LOL you win!
Just something to remember...the EAS, when used in ‘National Emergency’ mode, is in reality a last-ditch effort for the President to send a message to the American people. He would only use it IF there were no way for him to speak to the nation...that is, that he could not, for whatever reason, get his message out over regular channels.
If Barry the Boob wanted to inform us that he had just named himself Emperor For Life (as some FReepers fully expect him to attempt), he wouldn’t NEED the EAS unless the networks and the MSM refused to allow him to do so (a highly unlikely event). Since we all KNOW how much they love him, he’d be able to go on national TV and radio and make that announcement without the need for the EAS.
This system is meant for a true national crisis, like nuclear missiles inbound on the US. Granted the likelihood of that event happening since the demise of the Soviet Union has dropped dramatically...but the possibility still exists.
Can it be mis-used for nefarious purposes? Yes. Will it? I hope not.
What concerns me is that because I use TIVO I didn’t get the broadcast, and this system shut my TIVO system down. I don’t understand why it would do that, the regular ones we get here don’t do that, we have them regularly and I hear them and my system doesn’t reboot like it did with this one—why was this one different?
But in any case, if this had been a real emergency I would have been completely unaware of it. So, the system is worse than what we have now, which DOES WORK.
I guess those of us that did not get the warning are so screwed.
Who’s watching TV at this hour of the day? Seriously, it would almost be better to try to do it via Twitter, or Facebook.
At least those of us watching Fox News are screwed, probably by Obama's design.
By then, it was already too late. Just like it will be in any other emergency.
I recall all too well the 3 mile Island incident...the weatherman on the local channel wouldn’t even tell us the wind direction that day...prevailing west wind...blowing right in our direction.
Commo check. How's this NE Wyoming station coming in? You're Lima Charlie, lucky chucky.
archy, over.
Ditto. I had to call the NAB to figure it all out as the FCC “EAS Handbook” and e-mails were very unclear. We made it through the test with a lot of silence too.
You heard right. It was in Welsh.
Something I think is important to point out I have not heard or seen yet.
Many engineers or other broadcast employee was standing by the EAS unit just because this has been planned for a long time. Now, many radio and TV stations and computer controlled as are other communication entities (satellites, cable TV) that were suppose to participate. What happens when there IS a national emergency and it’s 3am and no one is standing by? That EAS better work on it own. So, now we must ask, of the ones that WORKED today, how many worked on there own merit with no outside help from a human hand? The number of successful EAS tests today probably drastically decreases.
The test failed in the ENTIRE state of Oregon...
The President of the United States has available certain powers that may bee xercised in the event that the nation is threatened by crisis, exigency, or emergency
circumstances (other than natural disasters, war, or near-war situations). Such powers may be stated explicitly or implied by the Constitution, assumed by the Chief
Executive to be permissible constitutionally, or inferred from or specified by statute. Through legislation, Congress has made a great many delegations of authority in this regard over the past 200 years.

EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM TEST FAILS
http://www.businessinsider.com/attention-your-tv-is-about-to-be-taken-over-by-the-government-2011-11-1
Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman released this statement to Business Insider:
“The weaknesses exposed by today’s test of the emergency alert system are unacceptable. Government and media carriers must work together to make sure the system does what it is intended to do, which is to transmit a nationwide message from the President in a crisis. I commend FEMA for carrying out this long-overdue, first-ever, nationwide test of the system. Without it, we would never have known the extent of the system’s vulnerabilities.”
What about Barry calling for Marshall Law? Riots in numerous cities...
No President has ever used the current [EAS] system or its technical predecessors in the last 50 years, despite the Soviet missile crisis, a presidential assassination or attempted assassination, the Oklahoma City bombing, major earthquakes and three recent high-alert terrorist warnings including 911.
There are around 35 50K radio stations that reach like 95% of the American public. I don’t understand why the NOAA Weather radio stations don’t participate, that’s just weird.
You point is well taken... besides a nuclear attack or Marshall Law... what else is there? An asteroid? The government would never let us know if we were going to be hit by an asteroid.

Ours did. The EAS computer can be set on auto to broadcast over the air even when no one is at the station.
I’d compare Obama to the Joker from the Batman comic, who also had a penchant for blanketing the airwaves, but at least the comic book character seemed to know what he was doing.
