Penn State Pres. Graham Spanier will quit or be fired today in wake of Sandusky charges, source says

Penn State University President Graham Spanier will either resign or be voted out by the end of today, a source close to the board of trustees told The Express-Times.

An interim president, most likely Executive Vice President and Provost Rodney A. Erickson, will be appointed and a nationwide search for a permanent replacement will begin, according to the source who requested anonymity.

Spanier was made aware in 2002 that a graduate assistant coach had seen former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky allegedly sexually assault a young boy in a shower in the Penn State locker room, according to grand jury testimony. Spanier did not involve police, according to testimony. Spanier has not been charged, but there have been many calls for his resignation.

Sandusky has been charged with 40 counts of sexually abusing children.

Two university administrators -- athletic director Tim Curley and Vice President Gary Schultz -- face charges related to a cover-up. Spanier, who was named president in 1995, in recent days has shown his support for the administrators.

Head coach Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in Division I history, announced this morning he will retire at the end of the season.

I can think of no excuses for JoePa not following up on the information he relayed to his superiors. More will come out in time and maybe there’s a rationale why he didn’t follow up. Maybe he was lied to by his superiors. They lied to the grand jury so they were proven liars.

If there’s not a rationale, then Joe will have to live the rest of his life with the knowledge that he had the means to stop a pedophile and did not. And many boys will suffer for the rest of their lives because he failed them.

He needs to go now - not at the end of the season. Every game from now on is going to be an ordeal for all involved, even the fans. If the big donor alumni started making a stink, this would get resolved pretty fast.
