Charles Krauthammer Sternly Advises Herman Cain To Stop Accusing People Of Setting Him Up
MEDIAITE ^ | 11/09/2011 | Frances Martel

With the possibility of making it to a primary increasingly slim for Herman Cain as he faces a number of sexual harassment accusations, Charles Krauthammer visited Bill O’Reilly tonight to give a review of his press conference.

Krauthammer was impressed with Cain’s “high wire act” but warned him that he had made one mistake that had surfaced before– accusing the Democrats of having something to do with the story surfacing, after his chief of staff previously accused the Perry campaign of the same. Krauthammer noted that he did believe Cain could survive, “but it won’t be easy.” In today’s “high wire act,” Krauthammer argued Cain “crossed a wire just about intact,” but for him to “blindly blame it on the Democratic machine” did him no good: “you can’t go around making charges if you don’t know they’re true or not.”

O’Reilly agreed, noting there was a lot against Cain, including CNN (which he called “the Cain Network now over there”) and the establishment Republicans, who “weren’t on his side to begin with.” Despite that, Krauthammer argued, “the establishment Republicans aren’t behind this,” and warned Cain should “stop throwing out accusations.” He also advised voters to keep the presumption of innocence, though O’Reilly didn’t believe this was possible: “we live in a country where judgments are based on nothing and people are destroyed,” he concluded.

Color me quite cynical for a moment — it could have well been both — but how did it eventually get clarified that just one of the parties was to blame for the leak from a hustler of dubious credentials? Cain may simply have been going after the biggest target he saw at the moment.

Charles probably told us to lay off the INS "spokes lady" back during the Elian kidnapping days.

Can we find out if he did? Then he is RUINT!

I tend to agree with the admonition to cease laying blame. His campaign directed initially poisoned those waters by blaming Perry’s campaign without substantiation. Now, to blame the Dems (though I personally think they’re behind it), rings a bit hollow. Better that he stays on the message defending his innocence in the matter.

One thing that might’ve been a good tactic very early on, would be to regret coming off as clumsy in his initial response, because getting hit with baseless, public accusations isn’t something to which he’s accustomed.

It seems that Cain has identified the Republican pundits that everyone hates and gotten them to say nasty things about Cain. Smart move.

Charles.....can’t you see that when Glory-a Allred enters from stage left that something’s cooking?

I agree that the allegation against Perry was at best irresponsible. Nevertheless, I think it is very likely he is being “set up”. The left learned its lesson with Clarence Thomas - they need more than one psycho liar to make a smear effective.

Cain isn’t my first choice, but I hate to see what is being done to him.

It used to be that the media was the only one on the block for news and commentary.

Now the average Joe can search out the facts on the internet, and they don't like it.

They don't like the fact that their dirty deeds are becoming exposed.

A comment like that just doesn't fly anymore.

It does tend to set up a moral equivalency argument (even if bogus) in the minds of the audience. Cain’s nose may well be accurate about this and both Perry, Romney, AND the Rats may all be ballyhooing this smear campaign, but proving it is harder, and Cain is concurrently arguing that nobody has proved any of the smear on him. He could still back away from that trap, and in the long run he will have to if he doesn’t want to look like he has stooped as low as his accusers.

In a more honorable age, presidential candidates wouldn’t have to worry about this. But that’s then and this is now.

Sour Krauthammer is so pissed off at Cain. I have lost a lot of respect for Krauthammer. The guy is nothing inside the beltway elitist.

Oh so it ok for CK to endlessly repeat baseless accusation with no substantiation AT Cain but it's then end of the world if Cain shoots back?

One of the Perry freepers - when this first broke - said there was “more to come.” I asked her how she knew and she never answered me. I asked once again and never got an answer. She hasn’t been posting recently.

So I can very well understand why Cain first thought it was Perry. I still believe that. But then I think the RINOs and DIMs are sharing opposition research with each other—

Krauthammer:“you can’t go around making charges if you don’t know they’re true or not.”

O'Reilly: “stop throwing out accusations.”
-----------------------

Yah, Herman, in order to defend yourself against against unproven and unsubstantiated allegations, you're not allowed to express opinions you can't prove.

Charles Krauthammer is the living embodiment of the hazard of being the smartest person in the room: assuming that makes you right.

Despite that, Krauthammer argued, “the establishment Republicans aren’t behind this,” and warned Cain should “stop throwing out accusations.”

Methinks he doth protest too much.

He also said, last night, on Bret Baier’s Election Coverage Special, that if Cain drops out, his support will initially go to Gingrich but will ultimately end up “with Romney”. Charles is an establishment, country club, Rockefeller Republican.
