Why Gingrich Could Win
Wall St. J ^ | November 09, 2011 | DOROTHY RABINOWITZ

OPINIONNOVEMBER 9, 2011 Why Gingrich Could Win Herman Cain's prospects were good until this week brought accusatory testimony from a woman who showed up in person, with detail.

By DOROTHY RABINOWITZ

Newt Gingrich's rise in the polls—from near zero to the third slot in several polls—should come as no surprise to people who have been watching the Republican debates, now drawing television viewers as never before. The former speaker has stood out at these forums, the debater whose audiences seem to hang on his words and on a flow of thought rich in substance, a world apart from the usual that the political season brings.

"Substance" is too cold a word, perhaps, for the intense feeling that candidate Gingrich delivers so coolly in debates. Too cold too, no doubt, to describe the reactions of his listeners, visible on the faces of the crowds attending these forums—in their expressions, caught on C-SPAN's cameras, in the speed with which their desultory politeness disappears once a Gingrich talk begins. Their disengagement—the tendency to look around the room, chat with their neighbors—vanishes. The room is on high alert.

The Gingrich effect showed dramatically at the Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition forum last month—an occasion for which most of the candidates had, not surprisingly, prepared addresses focused on the importance of religion in their lives. Michele Bachmann told how, after struggle and indecision, she had found her way to God. So did Rick Perry. Rick Santorum provided a lengthy narrative on his personal commitment to the battle against partial-birth abortion—a history evidently from which no detail had been omitted. Ron Paul offered quotes from the Old and New Testaments where, it seems, he located support for his views on the dollar.

There were two exceptions to the lineup of speeches....

You liked him in 2008? You mean global warming Newt.

You mean the Newt that crosses the aisle to make nice with:

1. Al Gore
2. Nancy Pelosi
3. Al Sharpton
4. John Kerry
5. Hillary Clinton

You mean RINO Scozzafava loving Newt.

You mean the same Newt who called Paul Ryan’s plan right-wing social engineering and dissed the Tea Party with:

Gingrich To Hannity: Tea Party Should Make Nice With NAACP.

http://www.redstate.com/skipmaclure/2010/07/21/gingrich-to-hannity-tea-party-should-make-nice-with-naacp/

That Newt who believes some illegals should be allowed to stay in this country. That same Newt.

Newt Gingrich is a Beltway Insider. He loves the life style which is why he spends so much time cozying up to the other side and reaching across the aisle. Which is why he has no problems believing other conservatives should reach across the aisle with him.

You may have visions of debate after debate between Gingrich and Obama, but you can pretty much be certain Obama’s never going to let that happen.

While I have visions of him running RINO whenever he feels like he needs some Beltway love.

I don’t hate Newt. He’s intelligent, understands conservative concepts and can be focused. But he can go unfocused just as easily and when he goes out of focus, he goes all the way. He needs to be under someone’s direction so he can’t run off and do his RINO thing. That is not a person that needs to be president. We need someone we trust to stay as far away from liberal side of the aisle as possible. That is not Newt.

I’ll say this: Since the Debates started; Newt has won me over. He would kill Obama in the Debates. I think he can win. I’d like to see him pick Marco Rubio for his VEEP.

can’t trust a person that makes a video w/ nancy pelos, al sharpton, agrees w/ john kerry on global warming

He said on FOX today that that video with Pelosi was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. He’s sorry that he did it. Have you ever done something that you later regretted? I know a lot of FReepers are unforgiving because they’re perfect and never had to ask forgiveness from God or anyone else. But, cut the rest of us imperfect folks, including Newt, a little mercy.

nice post

and I liked Bachmann and Palin

even with warts..plenty..I would pick Newt out of remaining choices...probably

still undecided

Newt is ideological and then he is not...he could be made to do right on issues we suspect him over..if he smells the forest fire on his ass...he is not stupid

People writing off Newt Gingrich are insane. He is clearly the most knowledgable, articulate candidate running. That matters. His 21st Century Contract w/ America is the biggest, boldest, and best plan out there. ....and his vow to force Obama into the seven, 3-hour Lincoln/Douglas debates is something no other candidate has the ability.... or balls.... to pull off.

Be honest about the other candidates....

Mitt Romney has Romneycare. That is an absolutely horrible thing he will not be able to sufficiently explain away. He is a bigger flip-flopper than John Kerry.

Cain: C’mon. He is is smart, nice guy. Great story. But he clearly was out of his league on stage with Newt. 999 has no realistic chance. It may be a tough pill to swallow for you Cain people, but be honest.... he is not prepared to be president. He just isn’t.

Perry: Crashed and burned for good reason. He can barely complete a sentence. His “illegal alien yardworker” attack on Romney was the lamest thing I have ever seen. ....especially since Romney was already attacked for this back in 2007. Perry comes off as a dunce that just spews out, poorly, the talking points his advisors feed him. Terrible.

Santorum: Good guy. Great experience. Can’t get past 2%.

Paul: Half brilliant, half nuts. Will never appeal to more than the 7% or 8 % he currently does.

Bachmann: Crashed pretty hard. Fairly solid on issues, but sounds like half broken record/half saleswoman. Will never again be a top-tier candidate this election.

Huntsman: Wasting his time and money.

I have supported Newt before the 2008 election when it looked like he might get in. I followed Newt closely between then and now. I supported Newt when he got in the race at about 12%. I supported Newt when he was down to 3% and his candidacy declared “dead”. I continue to back and preach Newt Gingrich. He has the potential to be one of our great presidents. Newt is bouncing back on substance... in spite of the media. Quit believing the media narrative that “Newt can’t win” ....or “Newt has too much baggage.” That is all BS. Romneycare is real baggage because Obamacare was modeled off of it, and it negatively affects everyone in the country. Now is the time for you doubters to give Newt that second chance.

Excellent assessment. It's too bad others can't, or won't, think objectively.

Your laundry list fails utterly to measure the cost/return basis against E Verify, etc., and it is patently untrue that he is for open borders, or Amnesty. However you choose to politicize the term amnesty, you will find no one we know will ever be found, on either side of the aisle, shipping all illegals homeward wholesale. There will be Comprehensive Immigration Reform and you will not like it, but it will be. The reason for this oncoming train is found in the glaring fact that the Anglos are no longer in charge. This state of affairs was not the fault of Rick Perry, who is left to deal with the reality of it. Are Anglos even a majority in Texas, but barely? You play the hand your dealt if you intend to half the jobs of the entire nation to Texas.

"So, Waryone, who’s your candidate?"

Generally, I like any candidate who not a RINO, elitist, socialist or Ron Paul. Specifically, Cain is my candidate.

In that one post, you have illustrated for all to see why Perry Supporters are referred to as Perry Apologists.

Newt may not be totally reliable, but if the destruction of H Cain succeeds, he is worlds better than mittens. BTW his agenda on his webpage is very solid, he admits his mistake with Pelosi and he has defended H Cain which the other candidates have not.

Must say I like Newt a lot and agree with you, but every little doggi gonna have his day, and Newt had his back in the middle nintys, then he sort of imploded, if Cain flops, and I hope not, we will see if Newt can resurect himself, he got the stuff and all the skill, time will tell

I would hope there are a few Freepers who have enough of an open mind to listen -

in election campaigns, the winds shifts rapidly - it behooves us to listen to all candidates - not just rely on our ‘erudite, infallible judgement.’

Bottom line, our freedoms and our country have not been in such peril in our lifetimes.

We’ll be fortunate to survive until Jan 2013.

We need someone who can hit the ground running from day one.

And yes, that’s a loaded question.

f the conspiratorial supposition should arrive for a January Hillary surprise, it is only Newt who could flawlessly go toe to toe with her on wonky. No one else would stand a chance in the wonk arena.

Excellent point. Food for thought.

If the hitlery runs - she will be formidable. With her experience, I can't see anyone but Newt being able to crush her.

The goal is win the WH, not hang onto "our choice do or die" because this election, like no other in our lifetimes, IS a do or die election.

primary season sure brings out the nasty sort in folks here ever notice that?

let’s see you guys alienated nearly everyone including many of her supporters for someone who didn’t run anyhow

and now you are acting the same way over Cain..

why am I not surprised?

it is a shame Palin did not run...it was her’s for the taking...Cain?

I’ll pass but you have fun.

It may surprise you but unless JR has changed his mind anyone but Romney is allowed here.

I am not enthusiastic about any of them..and like Huck said last week..if all we have in Newt then it must be pretty strange

I don’t see Cain lasting...but feel free to rub my nose in it should he survive...if he wins I will support him reluctantly

He may be smart, but he ain’t leadership material.

Really -

Name ONE other leader in our history that balanced the budget 4 years in a row? (and under a demRat pres.)

That's just one accomplishment - but it's one we desperately need NOW!

He'll also, immediately, take the steps to get gov't off small business's back - and they will start hiring - indeed, they already know he would do it - so they will start hiring right after the election.

Which is more important to you? Saving our country or putting some Ben Gay on that stiff neck?
