Unfortunately, there is a lot of echo-chamber fantasies going around here. Seems like a majority have managed to convince themselves Hussein is so weak he might not even run for re-election. The results tonight should make it clear that this country has not changed, has not moved to the right and in any noticeable way, and is as beholden to the social welfare state as ever (probably even more so). From what I see so far, this was not a very good night for the good guys. With a failed president and a crappy economy, the Dems managed to do quite well this evening in many of the big contests and on a lot of the spotlight issues.
It's a shame, because these elections matter, but a lot of people ignore the smaller elections. They'll come out during a presidential campaign, but that's about it. These small ones are usually won or lost by the political junkies.
What's unusual is an unprecedented turn out, but that doesn't seem to be happening anywhere tonight.
