SALLY SARA: Well Tony, the information that we have at this stage is that as you said an Afghan army soldier opened fire from a guard tower in an area known as Charmistan in Uruzgan province.

The soldier opened fire, wounding three Australian soldiers and two Afghan soldiers.

The wounds that the Australian soldiers received have been described as non-life threatening, along with the Afghan soldiers as well.

The wounded were taken to the military hospital at Tarin Kowt for treatment and they're receiving treatment as we speak.

TONY EASTLEY: Sally, the gunman himself - is there any doubt that he was a rogue Afghan army soldier, that he actually was part of that enlistment?

SALLY SARA: We checked with the Afghan National Army, our sources in southern Afghanistan. They were saying very clearly that this was one of their own. It was an Afghan national army soldier, not an insurgent dressed in the uniform of the Afghan National Army.

The Taliban have done a pretty good job of infiltrating the Afghan military. I have to imagine it’s a nightmare to vet recruits in a country that has probably hasn’t even done an accurate census for decades.
