Gov. Malloy: CL & P is a 'Greatly Humbled Entity'

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said he does not feel there will be push back from Connecticut Light & Power as lawmakers look to implement changes to prevent long power outages in the future.

“I think they are a greatly humbled entity and, rightly so, and I would expect a willingness to embrace best practices that are brought to their attention and I would expect they would invest in those best practices. If they fail to do so, they do so at their own risk,” Malloy said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

CL&P has been making progress on restoring power 11 days after an unusual nor’easter in October blanketed parts of the state with heavy wet snow that toppled trees, which in turn brought down power lines.

On Tuesday around 1 p.m., 18,089 customers were still without power and getting closer to CL&P’s projection of 100 percent restoration by midnight Wednesday. Almost 3,000 residents remained off the grid in Simsbury and 2,523 in West Hartford, two of the hardest communities.

At its peak, the October storm left 831,000 CL&P customers in the dark.

Malloy, in answer to a question about making the top echelon at Northeast Utilities, the parent company to CL&P, available to the press, said it was up to the press to seek them out.

“That’s your job. I have had those conversations. I have had them with Jeff (Butler). I have had them with other people in the company. I’m not going to tell you how to do your job, but I think you have identified it,” Malloy said of the missing top brass throughout the storm.

Sounds like he is going to try to tell them how to do their job. I was without power for 9 days, I saw the destruction on every road. Trees and braces down everywhere.

No wonder it took so long, but that doesn't matter to Malloy, only getting back and suing some big evil company does.

It appears that someone needs to.

What is their schedule for trimming trees near power lines? How far back do they cut? What percentage of lines are buried? Do they have dual paths to each substation? How many crews did they bring in from out of region?

Two weeks for an area that small?

...I would expect they would invest in those best practices.

I'm guessing the Governor does not realize that upgrading their capacity to handle extraordinary events will likely require a rate increase.

Whatever the schedule is, environmentalists probably scream bloody-murder every time they trim a single twig.

As a Cter..I hope Cl&P tells Malloy to go F himself and closes down.

It might be a surprise to some, but Ct is a heavily forested state.

I predict Malloy will go to prison for corruption. Only a matter of time.

Every few years I get a notice form CL&P asking if I would pretty please let them trim even a small branch of a tree on my property that is near the lines.

The hardest hit areas in my town were the sections where homeowners fight every attempt to trim trees to preserve the beauty and bragged about it. They still don’t have power.

Not at all surprised by that.

I predict Malloy will go to prison for corruption.

If it was in Illinois, that would be guaranteed.
