Political correctness is how we got into this quandry in the first place.
PC is not designed to make people “nicer”, it is a form of intimidation to force the majority to be ashamed of their opinions, and make that majority conform to the demands of the few.
But there is no way to be nice to a porcupine. Try, and you end up with quills sticking out all over you.
