Raw milk supporters rally around 'criminal' moms
The Washington Times ^ | November 2, 2011 | Jessica Claire Haney

Posted on 11/07/2011 6:53:17 PM PST by Tolerance Sucks Rocks

SILVER SPRING, Maryland, November 2, 2011 – They escaped arrest. The “raw milk freedom riders” who illegally transported raw milk from a farm in Pennsylvania to FDA headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland and then drank it and distributed it to a crowd rallied in support of their efforts got away with their crime.

As reported yesterday in this column, this group of raw milk activists planned the ride and rally to protest government restrictions on the sale of raw milk and the spending of taxpayer money to raid and bankrupt small family farms.

The rally began at noon as the swelling crowd gathered to hear speakers and await the arrival of the caravan, which, after celebrating its arrest-free arrival, gave out milk and cookies for all to enjoy.

In the crowd of 150 were raw milk supporters from Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Ohio and throughout the DC Metro area. Said Kimberly Hartke, publicist for the Weston A. Price Foundation:

“The rally was celebratory, as the moms, with joy, took back their power and acted out their food sovereignty as citizens of a free country.”

Organizer Karine Bouis-Towe of the Farm Food Freedom Coalition read a statement from the Obama administration that said:

“Barack Obama and Joe Biden recognize that local and regional food systems are better for our environment and will support family-scale producers. They will emphasize the need for Americans to buy fresh and local.”

“Only natural (LOL - so-called) means can save lives, and most health crises are caused by mainstream treatment and drugs.”

What a bunch of BS!!!! Tell that to all the epidemic victims of the world’s history.

Never mind your ludicrous statement on cancer. Get real. Go back to the Stone Age then.

Why place a poster of “typical microbial analysis”? I wouldn’t give a rat’s behind about that if I were buying raw milk.

BUT, I would want to see the test results from the dairy I’m buying from.

From my experience, the folks buying raw milk are much more aware of what the risks are of the product they buy than are those of us who ignorantly and blissfully pick up our jug at the supermarket.

I disagree. I do not think that most people drinking raw milk are aware of the risks. Many of them, in fact, make the decision to drink raw milk because they DO think it's safe.

In the first video here, the woman thought she was being very prudent, buying only from a dairy that did test its milk. All the information she found on the internet promoted great health benefits of raw milk. She almost lost her son as a result. None of the women in those videos had a full understanding of the real dangers involved. Note: these videos all concern hemorrhagic E. coli infections, but that is far from being the only pathogen found in raw milk.

Another word about testing: even if a sample from every cow is tested every day for every known pathogen, it is very possible for a cow to shed infectious quantities of pathogens in the milk. When I was testing human samples for HPV, our very sensitive test could pick up about 100-200 virus particles. At that level of sensitivity, you could easily consume several times the infectious dose of a pathogen by drinking a glass of milk containing 50 pathogen particles per 100 microliters of milk--below the limit of detection.

I'm all for people drinking raw milk, as long as they understand the risks, (for instance, by having the risks printed on the milk packaging), and they are paying for their own medical care.

A splint made of organic materials would have fixed your arm - that and some leech-induced bleeding.

Oh, yes, how silly of me to think that I would need to risk my life with anesthesia and surgery for a little displaced fracture like this one. Who knows what kind of permanent damage was done to my health by having those pins and wires attached to my bones for four months? I should have gone the natural route! /s

Your comments in general have no basis in fact. But go ahead and drink all the pasteurized milk you want. It is your health at stake, not mine. Or better still, drink soy milk...the worst substitute for a white beverage one could choose.

I'm just wondering--do you also eat all of your meat, fish, and eggs raw? Or does your complete faith in the wholesomeness of raw animal products only extend to milk?

Only natural means can save lives, and most health crises are caused by mainstream treatment and drugs.

Cancer patients, for example, never get to die from cancer; they are killed by cancer “therapy.”

Just... wow.

If cancer isn't a killer, then why on earth did anyone ever get the idea to try to cure it?

Honestly, I wonder why you frequent Free Republic at all. Most of the people with weird unscientific health beliefs like yours aren't even close to being conservative, and are as out of place here as a vegan at a barbecue ribs cook-off.

95% of soy in the USA is Genetically modified. You two want to drink Monsanto Soy Milk....go for it. Have a flu shot while you are at it , Baxter just withdrew the flu shot they were dispensing in Europe for folks with egg allergies....gosh golly head in the sand believers in eternal, benevolent Gov’t.

Why? Because there were so many adverse reactions.

I am sure though with your scientific prowess, you can assure those unknowing victims that their symptoms won’t be permanent.

Next?

Please hold on to you religous beliefs like your life depends on it. His next new piece of machinery does.

People have been curing cancer for millenia, who got the idea?

Legal cancer curing came to an end in the 1930s, so that Big Med and Big Pharma could get rich off ov it.

Get up to speed on what their thugs did to Dr. Royal Rife because he developed immediate cures for cancer through electromagnetic resonance. Or Dr. Gerson for curing cancers nutritionally.

The worst and cruelest crime wave in the history of man, and its bigger today than ever.

You have no idea what the word means.

Look up Steven Barratz in the Pennsylvania and California court records.

He lives to crush truth, and will even sacrifice his own honor and credibility to schmuck you and other gullible fools like you. That is why he had to surrender his license to practice.

I know exactly what "conservative" means, and none of your actions so far are consistent with those I would associate with a conservative.

Posting weird pseudoscience and saying things that have no basis in fact, while posting links from lying snake-oil salesmen are NOT conservative acts. Those are exactly the actions I expect (and have seen) from whacky leftists whose grasp on reality is tenuous.

“...do you also eat all of your meat, fish, and eggs raw?”

Rare beef is healthy, and I have enjoyed steak tartare. I like sushi on occasion. Eggs are more healthy for us raw, or at least with a soft yoke.

My question for you...do you cook your salads? Do you eat raw carrots, celery, peppers, onions, etc? Or do you cook everything? Anything heated above 117 deg F destroys all natural enzymes, and many of the healthy things in our food.

It is not about the products being ‘unsafe’...the big dairy industry is operated in less than sanitary conditions, and the cows are fed grains, not grazed. They are treated with antibiotics and hormones. Same for poultry. Be careful about what you buy and its source.

Also, maintain a healthy immune system. Eat a little ‘dirt’. It can stimulate your immune system. Stay away from antibiotics. Avoid prescription drugs like the plague that most of them are.

God did not invent or create pasturization. People did that. And nanny state politicians and ‘enforcers’ do things, like enforcing pasturization, not to protect us, but to protect the big dairy business.

If you like pasturization and ‘well done’ cooking, you might also like ObamaCare...let the state control your ‘everything’.

Well, at least you are somewhat consistent, although rather scientifically naive. (I also notice you didn’t include pork or poultry tartare on your list of healthy foods... hmm.)

Animals, being biologically similar to us, are hosts to pathogens that also attack humans. That means that no amount of sanitation at the point of slaughter or butchering will protect against those pathogens, because they are present within the flesh. Livestock, since they are raised outdoors, are targets of all kinds of pathogens, which they are exposed to from mosquitoes and wild animals. That means that no matter how clean the farm is kept, the animals are always going to be exposed to pathogens.

Some parasites have evolved to exploit our food habits. For instance, some parasites in fish need to spend time in other hosts, such as mammals like humans.

Plants, being biologically different from us, are not typically hosts to pathogens that can attack us. That only means that the probability of a pathogen being present within the tissues, instead of on the outside surface is decreased (not eliminated). Plants are washed and bleached before they go to market, to control the exterior pathogens.

This is why it is recommended to cook animal products thoroughly, but only to wash plant products.

I do eat rare steak and eggs over-easy or soft boiled, but I am under no illusions that the practice is completely safe. To reduce the danger, I make sure the exterior surfaces are completely cooked, because pathogens can be introduced during handling. In fresh steak kept cold until just before cooking, pathogens on the exterior surface don’t have sufficient time to penetrate the interior. The same applies to eggs. (Pathogens are small and move slowly; cold slows their movement.)

As for vegetables, I do eat some of them raw, but I inspect them to make sure the skin is intact (a break in the skin can allow pathogens easy access). I peel the outer leaves off lettuce and cabbage.

I do not pretend to understand what the concern about protecting natural enzymes is all about. Unless you have a metabolic disorder of some sort, you have all the enzymes you need to digest your food. (Some of those enzymes are provided by gut bacteria.) Considering that ricin and anthrax toxins are also natural enzymes, I’m *not* impressed by a desire to preserve food enzyme activity. Not all enzymes are destroyed by cooking: toxic staph enzymes survive cooking perfectly well.

I’ve attended quite a few American Society for Microbiology conferences. Those are real eye-openers: the struggle to maintain a safe food supply involves thousands of people, and even with all that effort, we’re barely keeping ahead of the threat. Food from a small family farm is not intrinsically safer; pathogens really do not care about farm size. No, I do not mind federal and state involvement in maintaining a safe food supply. I do not see any private entity that is in a position to coordinate all of the activity necessary for that effort. Besides, providing for the general welfare *does* happen to be in the Constitution—and, certainly, food safety is a welfare issue.

Let me close with mentioning that there have been 12 food recalls issued this week (http://www.foodsafety.gov/recalls/recent/index.html). Out of those, 11 are for microbial contaminations. Five botulism, four salmonella, one listeria (in raw cheese), and one norovirus. The recalls are evenly divided between plant and animal products.

Everything I have posted has a strong basis in fact, and the snake oil salesmen all work for Big Pharma, like you.

I’m tired of seeing threads about Freepers sick or dying, and the common denominator in every case is that they trusted their blind doctors to lead them to death’s door.

Good health requires a solid natural diet. The medical establishment pushes an unnatural diet, and costly, unnatural, ineffective “medications” that will increase their income, but decrease our population by attrition.

I've yet to see you say anything based on established scientific evidence. I've only seen you link to quack websites using whatever argument necessary to try to convince people to buy their "natural" products. If you have factual evidence for anything you have said, please link to the original research reports that support your claims. This is a good place to start.

Your assumption that I work for Big Pharma is just as silly as your earlier claim that my research is all false. You still don't know anything about me, other than that I am a medical researcher. If I work for "Big Pharma", I want to know where my paycheck is. I'm pretty sure they pay better than my actual employer...

BTW, I have nothing against "Big Pharma". They provide a very valuable service, taking the results of the research performed by people like me and translating them into actual remedies for people. It's a very time-consuming and expensive process.

“...you didn’t include pork or poultry tartare...”

In parts of Europe pork is specially raised and certified Trichinella spiralis free - pork tartare is served from these animals. You might enjoy a tasty appetizer of pork tartare if you were to go to France :)

“...although rather scientifically naive...”

Naivety is not my style. I am credentialed. Live with your fears, I will live with my knowledge in freedom and in good health.

As for dealing with pathogens, a dairy farmer friend of mine meters 50% hydrogen peroxide into the drinking water for his herd. They stay very healthy. He is milking cows that are now in their teens...unheard of in large dairy farm practice, where at most two years for producing milk, then its hamburger time.

During the year I lived in France as an exchange student (that means I lived with a French family), I never saw any meat that was served less than thoroughly cooked. In fact, the French, as I recall, like meat that has stewed or baked for hours.

Naivety is not my style. I am credentialed. Live with your fears, I will live with my knowledge in freedom and in good health.

Credentialed in what, exactly? Just because I am aware of the risks and take steps to mitigate them does not mean I am "living in fear."

The hydrogen peroxide is supposed to do what? Adding it to the water will kill almost anything in the water--but once the H2O2 breaks down, there is nothing to prevent pathogens from entering the water again. Since the cows are drinking after each other, and wild animals and insects also like to drink the water, microorganisms have plenty of opportunity to re-establish themselves in the water. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing objectionable about sterilizing water before giving it to the cows, but it is naive to think that cows are protected from pathogens as a result.

Cows actually don't even give milk until they're two years old. Some of the animal science people at UC Davis said that they kept cows in their herd until they were about 9 years old. According to the EPA, cows can remain productive for 12-15 years.
