If we don't shut this thing down soon, it may come back to get us some day.

It’s already on the way back.
But, though V’ger was just fictional, Overlord Voyager is not.

Voyager 2 is currently located about 9 billion miles (14 billion kilometers) from Earth in the "heliosheath" -- the outermost layer of the heliosphere where the solar wind, which streams out from the sun, is slowed by the pressure of interstellar gas. I think I could use a "You Are Here" map. :)

The thrusters involved in this switch have fired more than 318,000 times.
If only the company that designed and manufactured Voyager could design and build a car...

Switching to the backup thruster...will allow engineers to turn off the heater that keeps the fuel line to the primary thruster warm. This will save about 12 watts of power. The spacecraft's power supply now provides about 270 watts of electricity. By reducing its power usage, the spacecraft can continue to operate for another decade even as its available power continues to decline.Way to go, Dad! (RIP) He was the program manager for the RTG power supplies on these two spacecraft. Awesome achievement. If only he were here to keep abreast of what is happening.

I’m not sure who built the propulsion system, but Ford built that big antenna reflector in Palo Alto, CA.

Bill Clinton is, what, 65 now?
He’s probably had to switch to the backup
thrusters by now too.
