Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich have recovered some of the ground that they lost and are back in double digits in the GOP presidential race, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
The two men now make up, along with Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), a pretty distinct new second tier in a race that hasn’t really had defined tiers until now — apart from the top tier, of course.
The two men have now positioned themselves as potential beneficiaries if Herman Cain ’s problems persist and his supporters desert him. But they need some help.
The new poll showed Perry, the Texas governor, at 13 percent and Gingrich, the former House speaker, at 12 percent. Both are about 10 points off the pace set by Cain and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Paul follows at 8 percent, and “no other candidate” is at about 4 percent.
The recovery is notable for Perry and Gingrich because both men had seen their personal favorability numbers worsen and their supporters migrate elsewhere after some hiccups in their campaigns.
That weakening seems to have stopped and has actually reversed to some degree.
For Perry, the news is particularly encouraging because he has the money of a frontrunner and could pretty quickly become a contender again....

It could easily happen, though Palin is very low-key these days...she might save her endorsement for a time of Maximum impact...
I should add that I’m not gloating. I’m just ready to mow down zero with the candidate who now has a clean, uncluttered shot at him. What with the background noise eliminated.
How’s arrgh.blewdat taking it?
Got a closet Romney supporter here.
Kinda like Cain.
Gnawing on his elbows. :)
Like the Queen of Egypt...he’s still in denial...
Well.... we have to figure out a way to welcome them with the open arms they gnawed off and paraded around their neighborhood.
Pride goeth before the fall, and in dealing with this fallout we’re going to need some acute psychology skills.
Our work is cut out for us.
Taht’s *SOOOO* EVAL!!!111!!1ONE!1!
Saytan must be prepping to evacuate soon!
That is pure nonsense!
Medicaid, SCHIP, uninsured do get Gardisil free of charge on Vaccines for Children. It’s very popular. And now boys and girls are getting it.
You have no way in hell to prove yet that this vaccine prevents cancer, do you?
Neither did Perry at the time.
He wasn’t interested in waiting to see if it did, he went ahead with no evidence and tried to force this for the purpose of cutting a deal with Merck.
What’s with the ‘I’ll hold his goat’ support slogan? Or sheep, or whatever it was.
Nope. Would not be voting for Romney in the primaries.
Would never vote for Perry.
Would vote for any R in the General but Perry.
Like I said, a closet Romney supporter.
I’ll vote for anyone over Romney. That includes the general election, if he’s on it.
Oh, ok.
Which other Republican nominees would you not vote for?
None.
I don’t really have a major problem with anyone in the field other than Romney.
Though I’d hold my nose with Ron Paul.
Newt, Perry, Cain, Bachman... even Hunter are okay with me.
That said, I don’t think Paul, Bachmann, or Hunter really have a chance.
