A funny thing happened on the way to the Herman Cain lynching
Telegraph (UK) ^ | November 5th, 2011 | By Toby Harnden

By any normal rules of politics, Cain should be toast. So what’s going on?

The media and Cain’s detractors have over-played their hand. Politico, which broke the original story, published 94 articles on the allegations in under six days. Every other major publication followed suit.

Yet despite the maelstrom, Cain’s accusers remain anonymous and the details of the allegations vague. There was a growing sense that Cain was being treated unfairly.

Rather than mouthing slick talking points, Cain got angry with the journalists and claimed that he was the victim of a “high-tech lynching”.

That echoed the ugly confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas in 1991. Thomas was accused by Anita Hill of making crude sexual comments.

Vilified and mocked by the Left, Thomas’s righteous anger boiled over as he condemned the hearings as “a circus” and “a national disgrace” in which “uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves” would be destroyed.

Cain is also a black conservative. He sends many Leftists crazy because he defies the standard categories of politics. White conservatives are eager to support conservatives of colour partly because they appreciate the courage it takes to break out of the Democratic party straitjacket.

While decrying race-based politics, Cain has compared himself to Haagen Dazs black walnut ice cream, joked that he’s a “dark horse” or quipped that his Secret Service codename should be “Cornbread”. A Cain Super PAC cut a television ad entitled: “High-tech lynching”.

Just as Barack Obama’s race was a key part of his appeal in 2008, Cain is a more attractive candidate for Republicans because he is black. Obama’s supporters responded with fury and lobbed accusations of racism when their candidate came under legitimate attack from the Clintons. Cain backers have been similarly vehement.

Cain has slipped the noose. There is a power greater than the media and the political class.

Sexual harassment accusations can range anywhere from baseless revenge seeking through a boss calling female employees honey and sweetheart, inappropriate grabbing, demands for sex all the way to Bill Clinton’s felonious activities. I believe that Politico knows what the accusations are and they are so weak that they don’t dare release them lest they show themselves to be fools.

11,000 or so headlines without a story behind them are all th MSM cared about. This “scandal” without substance dominated even local newscasts around here. The MSM Propaganda Agents clearly thought they were putting an end to an uppity black man.

They failed.

The intensity of the MSM to manufacture a story based on flimsy and unsubstantiated old allegations shows how much they fear Herman Cain and what his candidacy represents!

Nothing less than a revolution against the status quo!

A victory for the Tea Party will only bring out more conservative candidates in the future.

I for one am tired of this refrain, I like Cain because he is the only real Conservative in the presidential race, NOT because he happens to be a Black man, I don't care about the color of a man's skin.

Cain has traditional values, smarts and an easy-going sense of humor. Of course he got mad when the media questioned him on a non-scandal but its like nothing else interests them. They were not so curious about Obama’s personal life and past associations when he ran for President.

Exactly. He isn’t like Obama. We know Herman Cain and those that don’t should familiarize themselves with him.

You’re right. I checked one day, and it was shameful to see more “Cain is finished” posts on FR than I saw on DU.

I happened on a DU post while I was searching Google for something. They were having a great time celebrating the circular firing squad.

This one was about the worst I saw:

America is sure to vote for a guy who paid women off to be silent about his unwanted sexual advances.

The Cain sexual harassment scandal is going to be a real problem for him. This isn't some Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas trumped up scandal, he paid these women off to silence them . . . including a confidentiality agreement to keep them from ever disclosing what happened.

Every time I start thinking, "Oh well, he isn't that bad and he's a true conservative," something else comes up even worse than before.

(Shaking head) Dang, there is just so much wrong with that sentence. First and foremost Mr Cain is NOT attractive to republicans. He is attractive to Conservatives...great big arsed difference there. His appeal to Conservatives has nothing to do with his color. We took a look at his character and decided that this was a man we could support and follow. He believes in the things that we believe. He is black. But he could have been hispanic, female, white or purple...it would not have mattered.

I think that no matter how far we go, how many generations mix race to the point that is hard to tell who came from where, the media will continue on with this meme of racial disharmony. I cannot imagine what is in it for them short of all out riots.
