Idaho Board Approves First Ever Online Class Requirement
Published November 04, 2011 | Associated Press
Boise, ID Education officials on Thursday gave final approval to a plan that makes Idaho the first state in the nation to require high school students to take at least two credits online to graduate, despite heavy criticism of the plan at public hearings this summer.
The measure is part of a sweeping education overhaul that introduces teacher merit pay and phases in laptops for every high school teacher and student.

"There is still a live teacher. It may be at a distance, but that teacher is still instructing and interacting with the student," said Susan Patrick, president of the International Association for K-12 Online Learning, a Washington-based nonprofit.

“Less teachers mean lower taxes—no?”
Should be true. Won’t come true.
Because education programs shift to an online environment does not infer that there will be less “live” teachers needed.
Just makes 'em damned hard to hit with spitballs though.
nice racket....
We wuz forced to git this here home ‘puter in oh fore when the local HS decided they would no longer axcept writtin reports.
With access on Al Gore’s World of Wonders Wavelength.
And then I finded you all. Soes now ya just have to deal with it.
That thing about unintended consequences. Like our last child.
The big news is we hope to git some running water IN THE HOUSE next year. Peeing in a bucket cause it is just too bad outside to make a run for the outhouse gits old. And you know how we almost lost little Timmy in the blizzard of oh ate when he give ‘er a run. Froze the Dickens outta him.
What many don’t realize is that online courses often require students to be MORE motivated and independent than class room learning. No doubt some students will do better in online classes, but most probably won’t without some upfront coaching (at a minimum).
Say wha...? Throw in a pinch of homeschooling and 'live' teachers are toast - and they know it.
...a great way to get 10,000 students into one teacher’s classroom. This could also reduce the number of students molested by public school employees, as well...now Mom and Dad will be able to keep a better eye on what is being taught to their children...
“Mom and Dad will be able to keep a better eye on what is being taught to their children...”
Heh, follow the money. Who’s buying all the laptops? :D
Clip a few teachers off the payroll, and you have plenty of money to buy laptops. If parents are going to get taxed anyway; might as well be for something worthwhile...
It never works that way though. If the kids are getting laptops than you might as well keep them at home and teach them there.
I am a teacher, and this won’t result in cost savings. *sigh*. It appears the ability to actually go out and teach a class is going the way of the dinosaur.
Why is there a question mark?
Thought maybe the dead ones would amount to something.
See? There's always a plus side!
