An explosive sex abuse scandal and possible cover-up rocked Happy Valley after former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Joe Paterno's heir apparent, was charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over a 15-year period. Among the allegations was that a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assault a boy in the shower at the Nittany Lions' practice center in 2002.
Sandusky retired in 1999 but continued to use the school's facilities for his work with The Second Mile, a foundation he established to help at-risk kids. The state grand jury investigation also resulted in perjury charges against Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president for finance and business. The two administrators were accused of failing to alert police as required by state law of their investigation of the allegations.
"This is a case about a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys," state Attorney General Linda Kelly said Saturday in a statement.
Paterno, who last week became the winningest coach in Division I football, wasn't charged, and the grand jury report didn't appear to implicate him in wrongdoing.

There was a longer story on this yesterday.
Lots of people evidently covered it up, and need some jail time.
Paterno knew his assailant raped a ten year old boy and he did not report it to police?
Why is he not immediately put in jail?
From yesterday's longer story, I believe Joe Paterno was told by the graduate assistant who witnessed the assault by Sandusky. Paterno reported the charge to Curley, the Athletic Director, which is why Curley knew about it.
I don't know whether Paterno had an obligation to notify police. The article (and I never believe what journalists write about the law) suggests that Curley and Schultz had an obligation to report Sandusky to the police because they had conducted an 'investigation."
Not a defense of anyone - just some additional facts from a longer story.
Penn Street? Penn Saint?
Paterno let this pedo keep his campus office until friday. There is way more to this story I have a feeling. Sandusky started his kids charity in 1977. Pedos don’t start raping children when they are in their 50’s. Paterno forced Sandusky to retire after he molested a boy in his locker room in 1998. Then he rapes a boy a few years later in Paterno’s locker room showers and Paterno did NOTHING. He never followed up when he knew this guy was still around kids. This is the end of Joe Pa sad to say...
Death penalty. As Bob Grant used to say, he has served notice on society that he is not fit to live amongst us.
Paterno will suddenly decide it is time to retire in a few weeks. Sick stuff. I imagine the worship-joe culture at PSU gave Joe a feeling of being untouchable and above the law.
State Police Investigators do not agree with you. Joe followed his chain of command and reported the incident to his superior. PSP have been investigating this for years. If they had evidence that JoePa was criminally involved he would have been charged.
...a foundation he established to help find at-risk kids.
This is like saying he should have called the Dean before the fire department if the locker room was on fire.
IIRC, state law requires reporting to the cops or a child protective agency. Paterno did neither. He and Spanier should both be up on charges.
My favorite part is how the original DA just up and vanished in 2005.
As for state police officers not agreeing, Roy Gricar, the DA who didn’t prosecute Sandusky, was mentioned in the grand jury report. Another angle that needs some closer examination.
If football coaches could marry this would not happen. Oh wait...
Re read post four, or the longer wallstreet journal story from yesterday.
Paterno only had a second hand accusation to go on. He wasn’t a witness. He passed what he had heard up the chain of authority to the people who are supposed to look into things like this.
Roy Gricar vanished without a trace years ago.
Yeah, I know.
