Child sex charges, possible cover-up rock Penn St

An explosive sex abuse scandal and possible cover-up rocked Happy Valley after former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, once considered Joe Paterno's heir apparent, was charged with sexually assaulting eight boys over a 15-year period. Among the allegations was that a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assault a boy in the shower at the Nittany Lions' practice center in 2002.

Sandusky retired in 1999 but continued to use the school's facilities for his work with The Second Mile, a foundation he established to help at-risk kids. The state grand jury investigation also resulted in perjury charges against Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director, and Gary Schultz, vice president for finance and business. The two administrators were accused of failing to alert police — as required by state law — of their investigation of the allegations.

"This is a case about a sexual predator who used his position within the university and community to repeatedly prey on young boys," state Attorney General Linda Kelly said Saturday in a statement.

Paterno, who last week became the winningest coach in Division I football, wasn't charged, and the grand jury report didn't appear to implicate him in wrongdoing.

If something even remotely as damning as what you claim had happened, it would be everywhere.

It IS everywhere. Our Houston Chronicle devoted almost a half page to the scandal. Google (Sandusky Molest):

Paterno did not know that an ex-employee was a child rapist. He knew that he was accused.

Twice accused and that no formal investigations were ever made of the accusations. Silence is golden. Can't have any scandals around here.

but I believe that the report uses the word “reported

Sinking your teeth into that statement? That is testimony. If you believe the testimony then you are believing that JP told Curley and Shultz that there was only inappropriate behavior. That was the testimony that got them the perjury charges ...

Joe Paterno legacy = covering up child sexual abuse.

Total B.S. Paterno is one of the good guys.

Sadly both of the above is true. I hope JoePa has another side to this story but so far little is known otherwise to think this is a sick sick story that will bring the Penn State football down. Time to begin anew, but this is gonna hurt.

that will bring the Penn State football down.

It goes to the AD, the VP of Finance and Business (retired) and President Spanier. They all knew.

According to the grand jury testimony, Spanier(president) knew back in 2002.

The ‘grad student’ that originally reported this to Paterno and in now an assistant coach under Paterno is being thrown under the bus.

100% agree. He was a grad assistant. Darn near the the lowest ranking member of the coaching staff. He did the right thing by taking it to JoePa immediately. Unfortunately for him, it didn’t go anywhere. Now the administration is making him pay the price.

Paterno reported it to the AD, not Schultz. Paterno knew that nothing was reported to the police and that Sandusky was banging boys. His silence in telling.

According to the Grand Jury presentation, that's not exactly true. On Page 7, you'll see that Paterno called Curley and invited him to Paterno's home the date after Paterno heard from the graduate assistant. Paterno told Curley about he accusation (although he may have downplayed the allegations; it's unclear whether the graduate assistant told Paterno about the anal rape, but Paterno did not make such serious charges when discussing it with Curley).

On page 8, Schultz, Senior Vice President for Finance and Business, describes a meeting with Paterno and Curley in which Paterno described the allegations.

So Paterno told Shultz.

The meeting among Paterno, Curley, and Shultz occurred before Shultz met the graduate assistant according to the grand jury presentation. The meeting with the grad student was a 'subsequent meeting." Page 8.

The meeting with the grad student, Curley, and Schultz was approximately one and half weeks after Curley met with the grad student (Page 7).

That means that Schulz was either called to Paterno's house on the day that Paterno first contacted Curley, or that Paterno, Curley, and Shultz met within the next ten days.

However, it's clear from the report that Paterno met with Curley and Schultz and that Paterno told Schultz what he had heard from the graduate student.

Penn State is getting to be quite the experts at coverups, given their whitewash of the climategate fraud and now this.

That sure looks to be the case, doesn't it.

Once "might" be considered to be a fluke (although it's pretty clear that the whitewash of the Mann investigation was intentional and corrupt). Two high profile cover-ups is starting to look like more than a mere coincidence.

Actually, he should have IMMEDIATELY called 911. It says a lot about the PSU culture that he did not.

Paterno will be sued with the rest of them. He’s done.

Spanier has pledged that PSU will pick up all costs as they were acting in their official duties.

Cunning move on Spaniers's part, considering he will most likely be one of the ones sued. Setting precedent and all that.

I agree but I think fair to give the grad assistant at least a little slack. I would have been shocked too. He at least immediately took it to his boss who is also the head of the football program. No doubt he is sick about it.

Respectfully, he didn't immediately take it to his boss. He immediately called his father from a phone in an office in the athletic building. It sounds as if he didn't have a cell phone on him. That was 9:30 on a Friday night. He went home and discussed it with his father.

I don't know how late it was by that time, but they didn't call Joe Paterno that night. They waited until Saturday morning. The graduate assistant called Paterno and Paterno asked him to come to his home. That's when Paterno found out.

Paterno waited until Sunday to notify the AD.

So the rape that took place on Friday night was reported by the grad assistant to his father immediately, but wasn't reported to Paterno until Saturday morning, and wasn't reported by Paterno until sometime on Sunday.
