The hype here is that there has NEVER been a test of the nationwide emergency system. Local and state governments will do them on occasion, but the Feds have NEVER been involved in one of these.
As a HAM radio operator and certified ARES/RACES coordinator, this test freaks me out a little bit too. It’s very much big brother.

Whilst I do not think there’s anything beyond this test larger than the Obamaloon administration trying vainly to demonstrate that they are not nearly as cretinistic as they seem, I do think there will be a day when we HAMs provide the only believable comms in the country. The MSM is not to be trusted, and the internet is a cobbled mess - easily hijacked by high school hackers who couldn’t bias a transister.

As I understand it the old Emergency Broadcast System was done “in voluntary cooperation with the FCC and other authorities”. Back in the day they were still sensitive to the issue of Big Brother just cramming his foot in and taking over the airwaves.
The only real question is how many jobs will be lost as a result of this test. That seems to be the one true indicator of this administration’s achievements to date.
