The day after playing in a Minneapolis concert, Cory Smoot - also known as Flattus Maximus, the guitarist for metal band GWAR - was found dead on the band's tour bus Thursday.

GWAR frontman Dave Brockie released a statement Thursday to Brooklyn, N.Y.-based MetalSucks, an online site featuring posts on heavy metal music.

"Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans," Brockie said, adding that a full statement would be released in "the next day or so."

The band played at First Avenue on Wednesday. They were crossing into Canada on Thursday and were due to perform Friday evening in Edmonton, Alberta.

Between sets at one show, I got into one discussion about Georgie Schwartz (George Soros). I quickly found that many metalheads hate Soros, and consider him a threat to freedom. A lot of conservative types there (as in free markets, minimum government), and this was in St. Paul, MN. The “drug of choice” at this particular show seem to range between PBR and some good strong ales. This was Amon Amarth at Station 4.
Yes, I’m 56, and I still go into the pit!

I’ve been in the pit with just about every race, gender, and creed. I’ve moshed with white guys, black guys (great metalheads, btw!), women (clothed and otherwise), Indians (Asian), Hispanics, Jews, and Christians.

We’ve always put down some brews in between bands, but that was always the extent.

And yep, Fred, I have several metalhead friends who are as red blooded American as any FReeper here. Come to think of it, I can’t think of any fellow metalheads who bat for the other political team.

I never even heard of them.

Sorry for the family and friends left behind.

And, of course, the obligatory showboating:

Don’t care for King Diamond myself; I can’t stand his voice.

I probably would love Mercyful Fate if they had a different singer...

“I’ve seen The Who twice and he was awesome them along with the rest of the band. The second time I think the drummer was Ringo’s son, he was way good.”

It could have been. Zack played drums for The Who’s Superbowl halftime set. He had Moon’s drum fills on “Won’t Get Fooled Again” nailed! Which maybe isn’t all that surprising, since IIRC Moon was his godfather.

“Abigail 2 the Revenge” was a pretty good followup, btw!
