What's The Matter With Oakland?
The Atlantic ^ | 11/3/11 | Megan McArdle

Posted on 11/04/2011 4:19:38 AM PDT by Haiku Guy

Cards on the table: y'all know that the Occupy protests and I don't agree politically. Nonetheless, I've been basically supportive of their right to protest, sympathetic to their frustrations with the system, and interested in their problems (and solutions) of self organization in a rather chaotic and fluid situation. Unless there were clear and dramatic harms to the community, I figured the cops should leave them alone until the protests dispersed naturally.

(snip)

At this point, the movement is hurting itself more than it's helping--at least, if you think their goal is to peacefully and democratically push for changes in the laws, a task for which they are going to require some support beyond the committed left. If you don't, of course . . . well, that has all sorts of implications.

If I suggest that the movement, and the left, needs to control this before the public really turns on OWS, I'll be accused of concern trolling. So I'll just say that despite our substantial disagreements, (and doubts about the effectiveness) I've been broadly supportive of the OWS project of organizing for change. However, if events continue to go in an Oakland direction, I'm going to become rather hostile to the movement. And I doubt that I'm the only one.

Think you could have picked her as the liberal hack out of a lineup down at the police station?

They have a right to protest. Not to be dirtbags and trash the parks and not to be vandals and spray paint slogans on buildings and not to be criminal and rape and steal and sell drugs. Their actions drown out their protest.

Yep, they're just like that racist Tea Party, aren't they? /sarc

McArdle began blogging in November 2001; her blog was originally called “Live From The WTC”, because she was working at the time for a construction firm doing cleanup at the World Trade Center site following the September 11 attacks. She wrote under the pen name “Jane Galt”.

McArdle married journalist Peter Suderman in 2010. She was a vegan for a year in 2008, which she ended due to a soy allergy caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. She has written: “I must stand up for vegan or vegetarian ‘chicken’ nuggets. They are delicious. Even though I now eat meat again, I still prefer the vegetarian version to the ‘real’ thing, especially after seeing what chicken nuggets are made from.”

Of course, the police know full well this is the game, so they are doing everything they can to keep it from getting to this point.

And America is watching these same police standing by letting hoodlums take over and destroy the place and thinking "why would I ever want to step foot in that lawless Hell hole"? Meanwhile, as the city is burning, the police are still setting up speed traps and citing non OWS thugs for littering.

The Oakland government is facilitating the problem and giving American more reason to distrust this farce of order and civility.

The mayor of Oakland, Jean Quan, is certainly complicit for having amplified this event, in my view, intentionally.

Mayor Quan, along with a lot of mayors, have decided to dance with the Devil for political purposes. They nurtured this protest, and gave it every opportunity to grow, because they thought the could harness the energy for the benefit of the Democrat Party.

Now, of course, the Beast is going to turn and bite them, as the Beast always does.

I have always tried to hold to Napoleon's maxim, "Never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity...". But it is hard to believe than anybody could be this stupid.

Even Laz has his limits.

I've never seen evidence to back this up.

I am going to be in the Bay Area in a few weeks. I have two choices to get to where I’m going. I can either take the direct route across the Bay Bridge, or take the roundabout route through SF, the Golden Gate Bridge and around the bay. The latter route is prettier, but takes an extra hour.

I think I am going to take the scenic route this year!

What's the matter with Oakland?

Liberalism. Oakland's last Mayor was California's current Governor, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown and has been dominated by Liberal polluticians and "civic leaders" for decades.

Oakland protesters seem different from Zuccotti park, they were dressed all in black and breaking windows. Van Jones is from Oakland.

Now, of course, the Beast is going to turn and bite them, as the Beast always does.

Look at how The Slave Party used the racial protests and riots of the 1960s to construct and maintain a permanently indentured constituency with the Great Society. After an example like that, are you telling me that they're so dense as not to see a way to enlarge said powers with "an emergency"? "We just can't hold a legitimate election in a chaotic situation like this." With the country turning against them, they NEED a true class war or else they're done and they know it.

Look at how carefully the commies have been planting the idea that violence is a legitimate response to the economic collapse the left engineered. Notice that they don't care what the grievance is; anything that will keep people sounding off is just fine with them because THEY will supply the "solution" in due time. I promise you: No matter now incoherent is the range of motives found on the street, when said "solution" is proffered it will be the same soundbite nationwide. These people do have email.

Here is the clarity of Thomas Sowell:

But if these loud mouths' inability to put together a coherent line of thought is any indication of their education, the taxpayers should demand their money back for having that money wasted on them for years in the public schools.

Sloppy words and sloppy thinking often go together, both in the mobs and in the media that are covering them. It is common, for example, to hear in the media how some "protesters" were arrested. But anyone who reads this column regularly knows that I protest against all sorts of things -- and don't get arrested.

The difference is that I don't block traffic, join mobs sleeping overnight in parks or urinate in the street. If the media cannot distinguish between protesting and disturbing the peace, then their education may also have wasted a lot of taxpayers' money.

Megan Mcaddled.... these folks are not frustrated with “the system”, they LOVE the system, its freedom, decency and capitalism they are protesting against. Inventing new forms of STD’s while they are at it.
