Need to make sure the system works in case of an emergency. For example, if new information about Obama’s past comes out Nov 5, 2012. Wouldn’t want to rely on all of the local stations who practice this many times a year for local emergencies to be able to get it right. After 5 minutes, one of them may decide it’s not a real emergency.

What’s the status on the attempt to claim authority to shut down ISPs in case of emergency?

I think the capability by the regime has been available and active for a while. They just tell you that they can’t do it...for now. I don’t have proof...it’s just a feeling.

Something else to remember: If a national alert comes down and it IS something like Obama declaring martial law (for whatever reason), if a station wanted to, the EAS encoder box can be shut off by disconnecting the power.

In the station I used to work at, the power coupling was easily accessible. I didn’t see a need to know that, but now...if I were working there, I would.

This same system has been around for over a decade. It was nearly used in the wake of 9/11, but the folks in charge felt the media had already alerted everybody within earshot or eyeshot of a TV or radio.
