HIDALGO COUNTY - The sheriff says the shooting involving a Hidalgo County sheriff deputy has a cartel connection.
Sheriff Lupe Trevino says Sundays shooting can be linked to the death of Samuel Borrego Torres, also known as Metro Tres, of the Gulf Cartel.
Trevino says Daniel Gonzalez Perez from Rio Bravo, a known member of a gang called Partido Revolutionaro, is the man who opened fire on his deputies. The sheriff says this gang was contracted to find a lost load of marijuana for the Gulf Cartel when Metro Tres was killed.
Hidalgo deputies rolled up on Perez and three other men during a traffic stop. While deputies interviewed the driver, Perez opened fire, hitting Deputy Hugo Rodriguez three times, twice in the chest and once in the abdomen. Rodriguez and his partner returned fire, killing Perez and injuring another.
This is our first recorded instance of spillover violence. The reason we are calling it spillover violence is because one of our deputies was shot and it started in Mexico and spilled over to this side, says Trevino.
At this time, Trevino is not releasing the identities of the three other men in the vehicle with Perez. He says he is waiting until they are formally charged.
Wonder where their guns came from?
America, what a country! We sell you drugs to ruin your life and you give us free guns as a tip!
And the Republicans will meekly let another opportunity pass to demonstrate that not enforcing our immigration laws has consequences.
The sheriff said a protective vest probably saved the life of Deputy Hugo Rodriguez, who was shot in the chest, abdomen and leg..
Glad the Deputy will recover.
Don’t mess with Hugo Rodriguez. Shot three times, even with a vest, and he still returned fire? I’m glad he’s on our side.
Never mind that the campuses of the Univeristy of Texas at El Paso at one end of the border and the campus at Brownsville at the other end have both had to go into lock down and cancel classes more than once because of bullets hitting classrooms and cars. Bullets also hit the El Paso City Hall. Are we going to have to wait until a student is killed before anything is done?
