I saw a thread earlier speculating (emphasis on speculation) on whether Karl Rove was the source of the Politico hit piece. Another thread yesterday reminded us of how the Romney campaign was involved in a 2008 hit piece (also from Politico) against Fred Thompson’s campaign, claiming he was dropping out of the race just prior to the Iowa caucus. I’m not making an accusation. But one has to wonder whether this was part of a well-planned effort by the GOP.

Well, one person knows the answer to that I’m guessing...Jonathan Martin, who wrote the original hit piece.
Now, is it fair game to besiege Martin with questions as to his sources? Or at least to ask him to characterize his sources? Or to find a leak inside Politico who will reveal Martin’s sources?
Of course it’s fair game. So, when will some intrepid reporter begin to play?
