He didn’t say there was no settlement. He said he did not know the details of any settlement. Geesh.
Clip this morning: (from memory) "I don't think there was any settlement, but if there was I hope it wasn't for much..."
It may be hard to imagine for some of you who are not executives or business owners that it is quite possible to have a settlement that you don’t remember or had no hand in settling. It may be even harder to imagine lawsuits that have no basis in reality other than generating money.
If you are not in the arena then getting sued is a big deal and you may even believe that if there is smoke then thee must be at least a little fire. But depending on how big an arena you play in these types of settlements could be a monthly occurrence and not very memorable ones at that.
No, he said he did not know there WAS a settlement, was surprised to learn there was a settlement, and hoped it wasn’t for much.
Now he says he remembers his counsel telling him about the settlement. That would be an odd way of saying it if his counsel told him TODAY. More likely he forgot all about the settlement, but now that he is thinking about it and talking to others, he is slowly remembering things.
Except he had 10 days to do this, so that’s not a good explanation. But it can’t be (as the article speculates) that he was being “coy” this morning — because what he said was clearcut, not coy, and if he really knew this much about the settlement this morning, what he said this morning would have been a lie, and I don’t believe Cain would lie to be coy.
As a stockbroker for over 25 years, I was only involved in one lawsuit. The company settled out of court, denying any fault. Only by chance did I find out they paid the woman asserting improper trade practices, $5,000 just to get rid of the headache. This lawsuit had nothing to do with sexual harrassment.
In many businesses one is told to have no further contact with the accuser during the entire process but only with company HR, attorneys, regulators etc who investigate.
The way I heard it, from a couple of news sources, was that the women were fired and were given 3 months severance pay.....
