President Barack Obama has chosen a historic 19th-century Army fort on the Virginia coast to be his first national monument.
Fort Monroe, one of the few Union military installations in the South during the Civil War never occupied by Confederate forces, will get the designation under the 1906 Antiquities Act.
"It's a huge economic opportunity for southern Virginia," Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told The Virginian-Pilot of the site that holds both Civil War and African-American history.
Antiquities Act designations havent always gone down well. Utah officials complained in 1996 that President Bill Clinton caught them off guard by creating the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Muslims were there too, no doubt.
I figured the first monument he would designate would be the records room of the Hawaii Health Department Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Fort Barack?

i used to be stationed at fort monroe. lived on base. id rather it be a monument than be left to the people who live just outside base.
the private company who took over the properties outside the moat are not any better.

Hw = He

what’s it going to be called?
the glorious statue of me?
Had to look that one up, sorry to say I had never heard of the Battle. Thanks for the info.
roflol!
My first thought as well...

We used to live near there. It had a very interesting pet cemetery up on the old earthworks.
