Herman Cain acted swiftly to put an end to speculation over the story about sexual-harassment claims during his tenure at the National Restaurant Association. After a few hours of confused response, Cain admitted that he had been accused, but falsely, of inappropriate conduct. He claimed that an investigation of those accusations showed at the time that they were “baseless,” and he seemed surprised by the news that the trade group settled the claims. “I hope it wasn’t for much,” Cain told Fox News, “because nothing happened”:
“I have never sexually harassed anyone, but yes, I was falsely accused while I was at the National Restaurant Association,” he said.
He added that he does not know that a settlement was paid out against the two complainants, and said “If more allegations come, I assure you that people will simply make them up.”
“The only other allegations will be trumped up allegations,” he said.
This is a much better response than the one offered last night in response to the Politico story. It acknowledges that Cain had to deal with accusations, and puts him on the record with a strong denial specific to them. Unless Politico reveals more about the nature of the complaints and the women involved come forward, this will likely be enough to keep Cain in the game, as it’s doubtful that voters will give much credence to the vague nature of the allegations — unless they get a lot less vague, and unless more people come forward with complaints, assuming they can credibly do so.
Fox also asked about a story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about possible campaign finance irregularities. I’ll have more on that later, but that hits Cain’s staff rather than Cain himself.
Wow talk about believing everything the liberals say... Are you usually this dim?
The charges are just hitting the fan...several today.
A desperate Establishment on Left and Right...fear Cain’s independence.
Cain denies charges as “Baseless and False”....Cain beating Perry in home state of Texas...Cain has arrived...

There is no proof ANYONE was paid off. On closer review of the Politico article, it appears that the women were given money when they left. How do we know this isn’t a SEVERANCE package? Politico is the one trying to tie the payment to their complaints.
The whole story is full of holes. This journolist, who incidentally is the same who falsely smeared Palin, cites 2 unamed women, who never even claimed actual harrassment and pits their story against the the chair, vice chair and immediate past chairman of the National Restaurant Association board of directors.
The writer himself is even dodging questions on this piece of trash:

So why are you carrying the water for Politico? You do know this is a leftist organization, right? There is a definite common thread to FR posters who are promoting these smears.
I still wonder how Perry’s Campaign Arizona State Organizer, Shawnna Bolick know about this”oppo” research 3 days before this attack?
I’m starting to wonder about the old Rove’s Iron Triangle coming back into play.
You are an ignoramus.
Your liberal postings speak for themselves!
Smelling this accusation against Cain from afar ... it appears to be baseless.
Remember, however, it was Clinton that gave us the one free grope rule; i.e., that one can freely grope until told to stop. Another stain on the Clinton legacy.
Thus the question arises ... were the alleged accusations pre- or post- Clinton’s free grope rule?
What liberal posting?
I am discussing politics here.
You are proving that you are an ignoramus!
RE: That is already a *political problem* right there.
I’d like to see the blue stained dress first before I say there’s a problem.
If I’m understanding this correctly, this was one alleged event, with both women present. Something about a business trip, in a hotel? So it’s one alleged story, not two separate potential harrassments.
The thing with Clinton is, the bar for bad behavior is very low for Democrats and much higher for republicans.
That is why Democrats have sex scandals and remain in office while Republicans do not.
If Cain is a groper, which I am not saying, then he should have become a Democrat.
Not with me. I remember Clarence Thomas’s ordeal. Dirty politics are typical of the Left.
RE: How do we know this isnt a SEVERANCE package? Politico is the one trying to tie the payment to their complaints.
1) WHO are these women? Identify yourselves.
2) What are the circumstances behind these so called payments? Let’s see the documentation.
3) What is the nature of these so-called harrassments? A crude remark? groping? was it on-going and repeated to a point they couldn’t work anymore?
Inquiring minds want to know...
4) Why did it take them 15 years to publicize this? ( We already know the answer ).
5) Were these women PAID by someone to make these accusations? If so, by who?
He may or may not. It was the legal department or a retained law firm along with the insurance company that probably took care of everything. In most cases, even if the charges are baseless and false the insurance company or law firm will pay off just to make it go away.
That would be helpful for Cain, if he can get the story out.
Cain talked about other possible allegations.
As Fox News pointed out, the mere fact that there were two women doesn’t mean there were two separate cases. It could have been a one-time thing, where two women were present at the same time, and they both jumped on the gimme a check bandwagon.
I witnessed exactly this thing happen last summer. My boss was in an office with two women, the door was wide open, and there were other people in the hallway. Both women in that office hated my boss, but he didn’t realize the extent of their hatred until later. One of the women was pregnant, and he made a comment to the effect of, How’s the baby? Have you picked a name yet? Maybe you could name him Frank. Frank is a good name. Frank was my boss’s name (fictional name for this story).
The pregnant woman took EXTREME offense to that, because she hated him so much. She accused him of being inappropriate, and that his comment implied that they had had sex! She found that thought so repugnant that she retained a LAWYER!! And she had the witness because of the other woman.
My boss nearly got run off, even though his comment was intended to be friendly in nature. Both of those women were absolutely useless as employees, and should have been dismissed long ago because of their horrible work performance. They knew it, and there were massive layoffs coming, so they used this to keep their jobs for several more weeks (until the project ended). My poor boss had to put up with their superior attitudes during that time because they had a lawyer.
Women can be extremely vicious, and Men are always on the defensive when it comes to these things. It’s always guilty until proven innocent in these cases.

That is incorrect.
This garbage attempt is either David Axelrod doing his usual thing or the Romney camp trying to head off growing Cain support. either way, it is typical dirty politics, which usually involves lies and paid fabrications, just like with Clarence Thomas and left’s efforts to crucify a good man (to prevent the nomination of a competent conservative black man by a Republican president, for the Supreme Court in that case). It gauls me more that black people continue to support these racist bastards doing this sort of crap to a fellow Christian man in full.
A couple of gals tired of slinging hash for a living conspired to get an easy payday.
But all they got was a 5-figure “Get Lost” payment from the insurance company.
Now they’re back as Dem operatives, looking for an easy retirement.
BOGUS!
I agree. It was Block’s “I have no knowledge of this” response that convinced me that the allegations were true. With Cain making an absolute denial—with no wiggle room whatsoever—I think the issue will quickly fade away.
