Letting the state get involved in marriage is what's at the root of the whole kerfluffle to begin with.
Well, I would say letting the state condition people to think that marriage comes from them was a huge mistake.
I don’t know what the solution is, state involvement wasn’t that bad for a long, long time. But once it was involved the risk was always there, that the state would usurp the role of faith in the institution.
I think what is probably going to eventually happen is some faiths are just going to ignore “state marriage” and take whatever punishment comes down for rejecting the state’s take on it.
