Herman Cain gets tongue lashing from CBS for cigarette smoking in ad

Republican presidential frontrunner Herman Cain got a tongue lashing on Sunday from CBS’ Face the Nation moderator Bob Schieffer over a much-publicized Cain campaign ad showing Cain’s chief of staff, Mark Block, taking a drag from a cigarette.

In a rare “editorial opinion” during the interview, Schieffer accused the former Godfather’s CEO of allowing his campaign to send a signal that “it’s cool to smoke.”

“Let me just tell you, it’s not funny to me,” Schieffer told Cain. “I am a cancer survivor, like you. I had cancer that’s smoking-related. I don’t think its serves the country well – and this an editorial opinion here – to be showing someone smoking a cigarette. And you’re the front runner now.”

Schieffer added: “And it seems to me as front runner you would have a responsibility of not to take that kind of a tone. I would suggest that perhaps as the front runner, you would want to raise the level of the campaign.”

Cain responded that, “We will do that Bob, and I do respect your objection to the ad. And probably about 30 percent of the feedback was very similar to yours. It was not intended to offend anyone and being a cancer survivor myself, I am sensitive to that sort of thing.”

The online ad went viral last week on the Internet and on cable TV for being unorthodox. The ad shows Block taking a smoke from a cigarette after asking voters to “get involved” in the campaign.

Thanks mandaladon.
Schieffer told Cain. "I am a cancer survivor, like you. I had cancer that's smoking-related. I don't think its serves the country well -- and this an editorial opinion here -- to be showing someone smoking a cigarette. And you're the front runner now."
Ask that question of Obama, Bob, you partisan media shill and hypocrite.

I don't think it serves the country well to have someone giving something alleged to be a news broadcast who doesn't bring up the smoking-cancer connection until he's got an opportunity to bash a Republican candidate for President.

Cain told Schieffer that he, too, had cancer, and it was Stage 4.

>>was he saying in a backhanded way that 70% favored the ad?<<

Wasn’t backhanded at all...more like in his face. Oh, yes, Bob, 30% of the people agree with you.

And not only that, he had Schieffer referring to him as the frontrunner more than once.

Cain can handle himself when under obvious attack better than any of the other Republican candidates...He comes out of the attack looking better than his attacker. The man is fast on his feet.

Scheiffer probably just gave Cain another few points in the polls also. Irritating Lib journalists is always good for scoring points with Conservatives.

And, to be honest, Block looks completely unaware that he’s doing his usual thing, smoking.

Where’s that pic of Obama smoking?

Last night The Amazing Race had a challenge in Malawi of moving 10 - 200 lb bales of tobacco.

Who will be the first at CBS to complain?

I see the Daily Caller left out the other part of the interview. Cain called out Margaret Sanger, eugenics, Planned Parenthood and the proliferation of abortion clinics in black neighborhoods.

Too much of a hot potato for the Dims. Don't wanna talk about that.

It's too bad more Republican pols don't have the spine to hammer on that. It was refreshing to hear.
