Error: USAJobs.gov (Uncle Sam tries to create a Monster.com -like website)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 10/25/2011

The Obama Administration is outputting job-creation proposals at Twitter-speed and ridiculing Republicans for not signing onto the whole package. Which brings us to an already up-and-running federal jobs program called USAJobs.gov. Well, up-and-running is an overstatement.

Americans in search of federal employment can go to a website called USAJobs.gov, which matches openings with applicants. Since 2004, the feds have outsourced the site's operation to Monster.com. Good call by whoever was in charge in 2004. Monster.com is the private company that pioneered employment websites and is today the largest job search engine in the world.

But 18 months ago the "smart" Obama Office of Personnel Management decided the federal government could do a better job of running USAJobs.gov. It spent some $6 million developing a new in-house version of the site, promising to improve the job-search experience. It unveiled its creation two weeks ago. It's a monster all right.

The volume of requests instantly crushed government servers, slowed the system and locked out thousands of applicants. Naturally, the site has a Facebook page. Naturally, the comment queue is boiling over. Examples:

"Why am I having to do the same search 3 times before anything shows up?" "Over one week now and I still haven't received my password reset email!!" "USAJOBS WEB SITE IS A DISASTER!" "I entered Delaware and got Germany jobs and all of the Forest Service."

Monster is nothing more than a worthless spam bot, guess that is why Obozo wants to imitate it.

Very little ever came out of Monster for me except little day or two or three IT contract/temp jobs. I’ve done better with Craigslist.

It would save time to just list the things that the federal gummint HAS been good at doing.

Say what you like about Monster, but I got my last two full time jobs the past 10 years (the most recent one included) from recruiters who found me on that site.

The problem with Monster is that it’s impossible to post jobs that can be done by telecommuters from any place in the nation or world. They still have the old mentality of a job being tied to a location.

The site has become a nightmare from hell. I am afraid for the Republic. The old saying comes to mind: “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!” I feel bad for the millions of people who have tried to use the new site - how many jobs have been lost?!!!!

For example: When you type “Fresno” in the area search feature, you are presented with options for any place in the world that has the word “Fresno” in it - like you would be interested in finding a federal job in Fresno, Mexico!!!!

I keep asking the same question over and over to a lot of people:

When was the last time in the last 50 years the gubbment did anything that made the lives of taxpayers better?

Nothing.

As long as there are state-sponsored employment sites, it should be illegal for the feds to contract with private services.

I have been unemployed 2 times in my life. Once at 55 and now at 64.

Both times I got only garbage from Monster.

All the solid leads I have had came from indeed.com and simplyhired.

I filed an application through Monster on one job I found elsewhere and from that point I got daily ads for some worthless service after another. I also think that is where I got on the spam e-mail from foreign scams.

My experience with on-line employment searches is horrible. Guess it is just me. I am sure some find it helpful.

I have found it much more difficult after 55. Regardless of experience. I am convinced that a large part of that relates to insurance costs.

Another issue was that I had only worked for 2 companies from 1972-2010. Both in the same industry. Wholesale Distribution.

What is funny is that there are no jobs out there except for work at home scams and Federal Gumment Jobs...but if you are a white male and a Republican you are SOL.

The only way you will ever get a job through usajobs.gov is if you are a minority and under 36 years of age and have a worthless degree.

Not being able to fill federal government jobs (even in the short term) isn’t such a bad thing.
