(Reuters) - Presidential hopeful Herman Cain's quirky "smoking ad" may have mystified many Americans, but according to a new Reuters/Ipsos online poll, it has drawn a sharp line between Republicans who identify with the Tea Party and those who don't.

The ad, which shows Cain's chief of staff Mark Block puffing on a cigarette for no apparent reason, created enormous Internet buzz this week.

Six in 10 of those who strongly identify with the conservative Tea Party movement said they loved or liked the ad.

An almost equal percentage of people who self-identified as mainstream Republicans either disliked or hated it.

Tearing down the other canidates does not build up yours

Why don't you try that for awhile! Good Lord I can't believe that came from you. The number one Perry basher on this forum.

You of course have better numbers...go ahead post ‘em. (crickets)

In the polls that really matters, state after state, district after district, conservatives have marched into voting booths and freely voted to restrict smoking areas or increase taxes.

Cain is facing a large majority if he wants to frame this as a smoking issue.

I’m a Cain supporter.

Gov Perry has been doing it for 12 years.
  1. Texas Quick Facts
  2. Texas is the leading crude oil-producing State in the Nation (excluding Federal offshore areas, which produce more than any single State).
  3. The State’s signature type of crude oil, known as West Texas Intermediate (WTI), remains the major benchmark of crude oil in the Americas.
  4. Texas’s 27 petroleum refineries can process more than 4.7 million barrels of crude oil per day, and they account for more than one-fourth of total U.S. refining capacity.
  5. Approximately three-tenths of total U.S. natural gas production occurs in Texas, making it the Nation’s leading natural gas producer.
  6. Texas also leads the Nation in wind-powered generation capacity; there are over 2,000 wind turbines in West Texas alone.
  7. Texas produces and consumes more electricity than any other State, and per capita residential use is significantly higher than the national average.

Why bring Sarah into this? Where was Sarah in 2000?

Far as I see it: In 2003, after an unsuccessful run for lieutenant governor, she was appointed Chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Okay, except for that little personal freedom thing.

Bizarre.

I thought so...neither of you have better numbers.

The Reuters poll, the Pew poll and the ultimate poll...American electorate freely voting. The public doesn’t like smoking...Cain can run with that issue if he wants but it’s a tough pivot to make it a freedom issue.

Blah, blah, blah.

Texas made Perry. The best thing Perry did was not screw up. He bring nothing new to the table.

That’s right. Perry did not screw it up. He is the energy candidate!! I am sure he had nothing to do with the new fracking at ALL. I mean I am sure some other governor, maybe even SP, stepped in to do that for him. Perry is the energy candidate!

Amen. There are entire cities, states going smoke free. Cain should have used a different issue to bring across this message. (and a better looking guy)

Cain is facing a large majority if he wants to frame this as a smoking issue.

No it is only big government loving, LSM believing people such as yourself that are framing this as a smoking issue.

This was pure marketing genius because it has the nanny state lovers all up in arms talking about a NON ISSUE.

I’m a Cain supporter.

It's hard for me to believe that considering how much you love smoking bans and Cain, in his capacity as head of the national restaurant association, fought AGAINST such bans because they infringe on private property rights, and rights to assemble. Smoking is not and NEVER has been the issue, the issue has always been about tearing apart the Constitution.

Smoking isn’t a conservative or liberal trait. It is a personal trait. It falls in the category of none of my business unless it infringes on my rights as a non-smoker.

Who smokes, or doesn’t, in an ad, makes no difference to me. Why does it matter?

So Cain does or doesn’t want the support of conservatives that have freely voted to restrict smoking? ‘Cause there are millions of us.

Our votes have enacted bans in some 75% of all areas. And each year the percentage seems to grow. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

PS: Any chance YOU have better numbers??

The ad, which shows Cain's chief of staff Mark Block puffing on a cigarette for no apparent reason...

Just the other day I saw somebody eating a candy bar for no apparent reason.

He did this ad back in August. I like this guy! He has a great sense of humor and a sense of the idiocy of politics! Herman Cain is like the little boy pointing out that the Emperor is naked. He is NOT just playing along.

AGAIN, not that anyone will read this, or care but...

This was not MEANT TO BE AN AD.

This was a video message by Block, sent directly to Cain supporters by email. The link was to a private video, not a public one (it is obviously public now)

That link was sent to the press, and now you know the rest.

This was not intended to be a campaign ad. It has gotten a lot of publicity and it appears that some folks love the ad, some folks hate it, but for most, it is a non issue.

Cain’s smile at the end is how almost ALL Friends of Herman Cain videos end - nothing creepy or sinister about it.

If you go to Cain’s Youtube channel thehermancain, you will see what I am talking about.

The public doesn’t like smoking...

Only the "public" that has bought into the junk science, and lame stream media hype that has been bought and paid for by the pharmaceutical industry. The sheeple, so to speak, just like you.

How are you going to react when that same electorate decides to freely vote to mandate that all establishments are required to permit smoking or alcohol or some other legal activity you may find offensive in all private establishments that invite some members of the public to enter? I would put money on it you would be screaming bloody murder that the government should stay out of it........
