Playbook has a sneak peek at George F. Will's Sunday column, which fires a shot through the growing GOP establishment consensus that Mitt Romney would be an acceptable, electable nominee:

“I think youre selling George way too short. Hes smart, consistent, and unemotional in his assessments. He does not spare Beltway faves any more than he does outsiders. He looks for truth, and more often than not tends to find it.”
Praying he will look at Herman Cain! We believe Herman Cain is closer to the truth than any other person running. He has our support. Wouldn’t vote for ANY of the others (especially Romney or Perry).
By which I interpreted him to mean that she was not, by experience or temperament prepared to be President - at least, not yet. I think she's answered that question, too, and I believe she made the right decision. In eight years... the answer may be different - that's up to Palin. I like her personally, but in retrospect Mr. Will was not mistaken in his assessment.
The bigger problem: Obama was never ready, either - and Will has certainly not shied away from criticizing him on those grounds. Would Romney be "ready"? Well, to be honest - yes - but that's not his problem. His problem is that he's a Progressive and would only lead us further down the path to socialism while fatally fracturing the GOP. "Ready to lead" is not enough. Ready to lead - where?
I hope so, too. I see something very special and rare in Mr. Cain. Really. In our age: a non-politician, a man of modest means, who by hard work, belief in God and in himself creates success and untold opportunities for others... he is the anti-Obama.
And even if he turns out not to be the candidate, Cain's very presence in the race could change the course of American politics (which desperately needs changing, IMHO). God bless him.
I would confidently entrust the safety and fate of this country in Palin’s hands more readily than any of the other candidates out there. George Will has proven himself over and over these past three years to be nothing more than yet another condescending beltway elitist, always backstabbing the grassroots. I’ve had it with these worthless bastards. Even if Will makes a valid point here about Romney, he can go drown in a lake as far as I care.
Will is a bit establishment and elitist, but I think your main problem with him is that you have a hard time with eloquence.
So do I. I disagree with him sometimes, but, as you say, I respect his judgement and the disagreements often cause me to think about my own positions. That's what a good pundit does.
And his writing is pretty good stuff, too.
I think he’s actually worse than a country club Republican, if that’s possible.
