WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The proposed merger of two federal agencies managing public land and mining is part of a White House effort to wipe out the U.S. coal industry, a critic said.
U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar called for the merger of the Bureau of Land Management and the Office of Surface Mining.
U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, said he had "serious" concerns about the decision to "suddenly and dramatically" change management of coal mines and BLM lands by U.S. President Barack Obama's administration.
"The Obama administration has not made secret its desire to put an end to America's coal mining industry and this appears to be one more step in that direction," Hastings said.
Hastings said BLM and OSM have separate duties. OSM oversees surface coal mining regulations while BLM manages more than 245 million acres primarily in 12 Western states, including Alaska.

Just in time for your winter heating and electricity bills.
As he promised to do in prior statements (”electric bills would necessarily skyrocket”, etc.)
And yet you fools in West Virginia went ahead and sent Joe Manchin to the Senate. It will still be your dumbest decision ever, even if you do join the Big 12.
Energy policy is one more indirect way to accomplish redistribution and establish socialist control. After limiting drilling and exploration, coal is the next sector to attack.
No, when they vote again for Obama in '12, that will be their dumbest decision.
When coal produces 42% of the US electricity , for the EPA / WH to threaten closure of the coal industry prior to winter is illogical .
Rolling “brown-outs” in Texas just this last season .
No nuclear plants built in the last 25-30 years .
The largest coal deposit in the Western Hemisphere exists in our backyard - no importing , no balance of payments , no threat to our supply - EXCEPT by our President ! GO FIGURE !!
He is making us a bananna-republic by his leadership from behind !
Killing jobs has been his strategy all along. Why change course now?
He said he would go after coal during the 2008 election...West Virginia I think voted for him...Isnt that the classic definition of insanity...repeating same behavior and expecting a different result...
WV delivered for McLame...not for Obama
Only the American coal mining industry. The larger Chinese coal industry will be unaffected.
Dear FACES Member,
Its time to protect our nations remaining mining jobs by urging our lawmakers to stop the out-of-control EPA!
H.R. 2018, the Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act of 2011, has passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Hopefully a companion piece of legislation will come up for a vote before the entire U.S. Senate soon -- we need you to urge your Senators to make this happen!
The EPA has made it quite clear that it does not consider the importance of coal jobs, coal communities or even states rights in their decision making process. Please let your lawmakers know that you support H.R. 2018 and the common-sense protections it puts in place:
The bill includes protections for states already EPA-approved water quality standards and permitting authority under the Clean Water Act (CWA.)
The bill sets reasonable time limits for agency comment periods and helps reduce pointless bureaucratic delays in the section 404 permitting process.
The bill places limits on EPAs ability to veto dredge and fill permits issued by the Army Corps of Engineers and gives states more flexibility to administer these permitting programs.
Lets stop the EPA overreach across the nation right now please TAKE ACTION now by sending a letter to your lawmakers in support of H.R. 2018, the Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act of 2011."
Thank you for your support,
Federation for American Coal, Energy and Security (FACES of Coal)

But coal workers can get their student loans forgiven after 20 years........./S
“vote again for Obama”?
In 2008, West Virginia went for Sarah Palin and her running mate.
Sorry. I should have looked that up instead of assuming it went for BO.
WV did NOT vote for Zer0....unlike those of you in PA!
“After limiting drilling and exploration, coal is the next sector to attack.” — Don’t forget, California is implementing cap & trade to destroy any and all industries that use energy.
Manchin, Rockefeller Co-sponsor Coal Ash Bill in Senate
“But coal workers can get their student loans forgiven after 20 years.”
Even better, they can take out $200,000 in loans to retool themselves, become social workers in their impoverished towns, and pay back only $11,000 after 20 years! It’s a win-win-win for everybody!
