Howie Carr list ping (and yes Howie has been playing clips of the song)

Here is the link again

From Wikipedia:
"Bang the Drum All Day" is a 1983 song by Todd Rundgren. The lyrics describe in first person, the singer's drive to "bang the drum all day" to the exclusion of everything else. All the instruments on this track are performed by Rundgren. The song has become popular as an anti-work anthem or anthem of celebration...The song is used by conservative talk radio host Jim Quinn as his union heads-up theme...

It is very popular at sporting events. The most famous use of the song is at Lambeau Field, as it is played after every Green Bay Packers touchdown. This started at Green Bay in 1995 and has since spread to other teams around the NFL. The Los Angeles Dodgers also play the song when a run is scored. link

Wiki.:
>>Maynard G. Krebs (the G. stood for Walter) was the “beatnik” sidekick of the title character in the U.S. television sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

>>The Krebs character, portrayed by actor Bob Denver, began as a stereotypical beatnik, with a goatee, “hip” (slang) usage, and a generally unkempt, bohemian appearance. His abhorrence of conventional social forms was signified by comical reactions to the three words: “work”, “marriage”, and “police”. For example, whenever the word “work” was mentioned, even in passing, he would yelp “Work?!” and jump with fear or even faint. He served as a foil to the well-groomed, well-dressed, straitlaced Dobie, and the contrast between the two friends provided much of the humor of the series...The series inspired the creator of Scooby Doo, whose four human characters were modeled from characters on the series, with Shaggy Rogers being inspired by Maynard.

From Dobie Gillis, but not Dobie—Maynard G. Krebs character. Played by the late Bob Denver who would later play the title character on Gilligan’s Island, of course.

Ah, right. Dobie was the clean-cut square. I only remember the show from the reruns my uncle introduced us to in the early 80s.

I’m a huge Gilligan’s Island afficionado. I have the total collection. Bob Denver was a good man, but somehow I always thought of he and Bob Crane as buddies. We’re they ever in anything together? Auto Focus was a great movie. (sorry, totally off topic and worthy of a micro-ZOT.)

‘Bang on the drum’? I always heard of it as ‘loping the mule’.

An appropriate anthem for the "Occupy Wall Street" movement is Hallelujah! I'm a Bum! by Haywire Mac.

I saw Todd perform the song with Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band many years ago.

Another option might be “I don’ wanna grow up! I don’ wanna be a man...” from Peter Pan.

More trivia: the girl who played Dobie’s girlfriend (Gilda?)in her real world life went on to become a high-powered patent attorney.
