Rangel wants wealth redistribution, says rich didn't sacrifice for war
The Hill ^ | October 26, 2011 | Pete Kasperowicz

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) on Wednesday called for the redistribution of America's riches and hammered the wealthy for benefitting from a war effort fought by the poor and middle class.

Citing statistics that show 1 percent of Americans now own 42 percent of the nation's wealth, the lawmaker representing Harlem said: "There is something wrong with that formula."

Rangel offered no specific remedy for adjusting those figures during his comments on the House floor, but argued further that the wealthiest one percent have the added benefit of not needing to get involved in military service.

"Why is it that we know, or that we can suspect, that in this war where we lost so many lives, that so many people have been wounded, that our brave men and women coming home will subject themselves with a lack of funds to deal with their physical or mental problems?" he asked. "Any yet we somehow know that that 1 percent was not involved in defending our great nation."

"We can almost know without any investigation that the wealthiest of Americans never found themselves protecting our flag," he added.

Rangel said the economy would be helped by getting more money in the hands of the other 99 percent. "If we have the other 99 percent of the people who are not wealthy, and if it was possible for them to get a fair shake and have more expendable income, you wouldn't have to put out ads for them to buy," he said.

Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) spoke after Rangel and argued and the U.S. as a nation is not broke, even though the federal government is broke. the U.S. is effectively keeping the federal government broke by not taxing the wealthy, he said.

"Despite what you hear on TV, despite what you hear on Fox News today, taxes as a percentage of GDP today are at a 60 year low," Murphy said.

Murphy said taxing the top 1 percent more is a needed step because the income of the other 99 percent has remained mostly flat over the past several years, while the income of the top tier has increased sharply.

C'mon Charlie, you fought against communism in the Korean war and now you're advocating a form of it for us. You also weren't very anxious to pay your fair share of taxes when your hid income from the IRS.

My Dentist runs a huge dental clinic that offers every kind of dental work imaginable. He’s a very wealthy man. He also goes to Iraq/Afghanistan every year for 3 months and offers his services to the soldiers. So up yours Charlie.

Doesn't Rangel describe the communists manifesto to reduce all citizens to an equal status and then subject them to slavery? Democrats are communists and there is no doubt about that.

I think we need to call him “Charlie Censure” from now on.

The largest group of people that are trying to stop people from becoming rich, in this country, are liberal democrats. It sure as hell isn’t those already “rich”. I don’t see the mountain of evidence for that. I see the mountain of evidence against liberal democrats however, of doing just that.

The slum lord opens his fat mouth again..

While Charles Rangel lived across the street in luxury Harlem digs, his tenants coped with collapsing ceilings, sinking floors and roaches.

In just one apartment in the six-unit building on West 132nd Street, city inspectors found nine violations in 2003. Rangel and his wife, Alma — the landlords — were ordered to repair the wood floor in the entire apartment, plaster, paint, fix broken bathroom tiles and faulty window frames, and get rid of roaches and mice.

The city also found that the Rangels failed to file the building's annual occupancy statement five times between 1982 and 1996.

I’m still trying to figure out how a person who has never worked in the private sector made so much money.

...that our brave men and women coming home will subject themselves with a lack of funds to deal with their physical or mental problems?" he asked.

I see the English language is not one of his strong suits either.

I believe we all know how he made much of his money, and it wasn’t legal. Then when he got caught red handed for tax fraud the IRS wouldn’t prosecute, if it would have been you or I we would have been in a federal courtroom.

If Rangel took 30 seconds to do a Google search before he opened his tax-evading mouth, he’d know he’s full of it.

Here’s an interesting article about CEOs and military service.

Well one thing...is All members of Congress can do "insider" trading legally.

So...if they are getting ready to over regulate / deregulate or mandate eggs, lumber, coal, miners..etc, you name it....They can buy or sell shares/futures...knowing what's going to happen in advance.

I thought 'Cheat'em' Charlie was one of those 'rich' people he babbles about. Or is it the usual Liberal crap about this only applying to other 'rich' people?
