Mood turns ugly as Telegraph investigates claims that only one in ten tents is occupied at night.
The camp forced St Paul's to close for the first time since the Blitz and is costing local businesses thousands of pounds a day.
But footage shot by The Daily Telegraph on a thermal imaging camera appeared to show most of the dozens of tents in the cathedral churchyard were empty. And when the remaining protesters realised what The Telegraph was attempting to verify this, the mood turned ugly.
The site was quiet at around 12.30am with the faint smell of marijuana smoke in the air. A handful of police officers stood back on the fringes of the encampment.
One female protester said "these are our homes", to which a male fellow activist pointed out that they were not.
On Monday the revelation was described as a "charade" and pressure was growing on the church and other authorities to evict the camp.
"It is like a phantom camp a big charade," said Matthew Richardson, a Corporation of London councillor, who is calling for action to be taken.
"It just shows that most of the people don't have the courage of their convictions and are here just to make trouble and leaving your tent here overnight is a good way to do that."

LOL a fake occupy
Try to imagine conservatives pulling something like that.
There is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals.
The next time somebody says the Tea Party and the Occupado pukes are two sides of the same coin, just ***** him right in the *****.
Not, of course, that I would ever endorse or promote the use of violence against evil scoundrels who will never cease their attacks for so long as they draw the breath of life.
Looks like people’s eyes are being opened.....
The whole Occupy thing is a big sham.
Nasty people scamming folks.
The tents are uprising, and just need hippies to drive their stakes.
Maybe it’s time to “redistribute” the empty tents to places where they are needed. Turkey, for example.
So do the Russians look up Potemkin village.
That’s a good one take to attaboys out of petty cash.
