Lots of Texans know a lot about Perry, which is why 60% of Texans voted for "anybody but Rick Perry" in the 2006 four-way election. He does not have a strong following or wide popularity in Texas. He's more like prostate cancer -- people put up with him/it, mostly because he/it won't kill you quickly or do too much damage in the next four years.
There is just one heck of a long stretch between a timeserving errand-boy for the rich like Perry, and a real public servant of the stature of Sam Rayburn or John Nance Garner, or even the reform-minded Democrat, the late Price Daniel, who was murdered by his wife while still young.
I'm no fan of the Bushes and their brand of Up East Republicanism, but guys like Rick Perry make them look good. You can say that, well, maybe that's because guys like Perry do stuff the Bushes haven't had to do since dynast Prescott Bush finally made the U.S. Senate -- but it's still true.
