A day of action to stand in solidarity

Occupy Scranton turns four days old with no intentions of stopping as demonstration turns into full time occupation on Linden Street in Scranton.Members of the Occupy Wall Street- Scranton, PA, started out on Saturday Oct. 15 at noon with a two-day event to help contribute to the Occupy Wall Street day of action and day of solidarity.

Over the weekend of marches, speeches, music and over night sleeping happened on the Linden Street side of the Lackawanna Court House. At the end of Sunday’s event the body of Occupy Scranton had a meeting and the plan changed. It became clear the Occupy Scranton movement had the desire to continue until the occupation.

Occupy Scranton has been in conversation’s with Lackawanna County Officials and came up with a plan to extend the occupation. The group will stay on the Linden Street side of the Lackawanna County Courthouse. Members will be allowed to put up tents after business hours and continue their protest. The two tents that are information stands can remain open. Protesters can carry signs and express their voices, day and night as long as it takes. The event is peaceful and will not use bullhorns when court is in session and businesses are open out of respect for the community. However, their presence will be consistent in Scranton.

A critical time

Our country is in a crisis. You can say there is a very big gap between the ultra rich and the 99 percent of us who are not driven by unbridled greed.

We have a country that has been deregulated at the expense of the conscience of our country. We are experiencing the ripping apart of America. The American Dream is going down the drain in this race to the bottom. The mega-banks and corporations do not care about the people with no jobs, no homes, no cars or transportation. They are interested in only themselves holding on to money and power.

It is critical we fight to get our society back. This is a revolution like none before it. This is on a global scale. Every small town that thinks they cannot be affected by what is going on in DC is kidding themselves. They need to know- your American Dream is being taken away from you and your family.

Occupy Scranton is one of the examples of a tidal wave that is pushing back on the upheaval and alienation, much like the other crucial movements in our past that led to a more equal and fairer American society.

History is a good teacher. Those who have not learned from it are doomed to repeat it. American movements began more than 200 years ago with a revolution against the tyranny of King George, who wanted to extract as much money from the colonies as possible. It includes the Civil War and Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation; Women’s Suffrage (remember that not too long ago, women were not allowed to vote or wear pants); and the Civil Rights Movement, which recognized that the Emancipation Proclamation needed teeth.

Occupy Scranton is a small part of a historic movement to help save ourselves from the present system that does not recognize who the citizens of this country really are.

This nonsense showed up in the opinon section of my local paper this weekend. I’m curious to know if this is an original thought or a form letter from the AFL-CIO. Has anyone else seen similar postings in their local papers? If so, let me know because I’d to expose this as Astro Turf.

It is indeed about taking our country back — from the leftist trash that has been trying to destroy it. Thanks RBW in PA.

The author is delusional. Where to begin Greed? Deregulation? Extracting as much as "they" can?

She should look in the mirror. I can generally avoid or try to avoid doing business with private businesses and public companies.

I can't avoid the drunken tax and spenders in Congress and the White House, and have a harder time avoiding poor to lousy union "labor" that have monopolies.
