Former Phila. colleagues remember Cain fondly
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 10/23/11 | Former Phila. colleagues remember Cain fondly

"The man has something, a natural-born leadership quality," Cerrone said. "He inspires people to get things done." The Burger King regional office was then on Fellowship Road in Mount Laurel, across from NFL Films. Cerrone said Cain lived in Moorestown. "Herman has one of those unusual work habits," Cerrone said. "He used to tell stories that he rarely needed more than four hours of sleep a night." This praise is especially noteworthy insofar as it comes from a man Cain did not promote from his acting position.

"We met for drinks at a Mount Laurel hotel bar to discuss my potential promotion," Cerrone remembered. "This occurred sometime in 1984 and Jesse Jackson was running for president. I started the conversation with what I consider to be the DUMBEST thing I've ever said . . . 'So, I guess you're supporting Jesse Jackson for president?' Mind you, I had no idea what Herman's politics were! He responded with, 'Why would you assume that?' " Cain went on to tell him that, no, he was not supporting Jackson, and then explained why he was not getting the promotion. By the time Cain was finished, Cerrone said, "I honestly had to agree with his assessment!"

Cerrone also recalls the day Cain took all the managers to a company-owned restaurant in Maple Shade. "He explained it was important for us to understand what the front-line people had to do every day to serve our customers," Cerrone said. Suffice it to say, not all were thrilled with broiling burgers, running the deep fryer, making burgers, and taking orders from customers. "In the end, we did have a much better perspective of the day-to-day lives of our store managers," Cerrone said.

He’s a leader. He’s smart. He’s positive but not in a phoney way. He’s NOT PC! He is NOT a smarmy politician. He speaks his mind. He can speak in complete sentences. He is fearless. I have know doubt he can handle whatever they will throw at him. He’s Herman Cain!

None of Obama’s former college colleagues remember him fondly or otherwise.

“He explained it was important for us to understand what the front-line people had to do every day to serve our customers,”

1000%, amen.

In any enterprise it is paramount that the top understand what the field is doing and experiencing on a routine daily basis. I’ve been in too many (and one now) that does not seem to value the experience of the field or fully take them into account. Too often the reasonable objections or questions of the field are dismissed as laziness or disloyalty by the brass. Now, those in the field can be those things, but if you don’t now their job then you can’t tell the difference. It makes me sick sometimes.

I figured as much...he walks the walk. Those leadership skills are not something new, he has been doing positive things his entire career. He reminds me of one or two of the best bosses I have ever had.

If he is well liked among former employees, even one he did not promote, that speaks very well of him. An honest man, how refreshing.

***I have no doubt he can handle whatever they will throw at him. He’s Herman Cain!***

I believe most of us empathize with H.Cain’s ‘back tracks’.

He is used to discussing problems, asking for input, looking at different points of view, trusting, trusting, trusting that others are trying to find a solution - NOT TRIP HIM UP!!!!

It’s almost as if his interviews are police interrogations. Not sure how BO could handle one question about his background, his associates and his Marxist ideology if he WAS EVER ASKED!!!

Cain is definitely showing some potential to hang in there and be the guy. Bachmann has been a little spotty, Perry was never a solid conservative AND he has not done a good job of selling himself, and Santorum has gotten no traction. As a losing candidate for Senate, it makes it tough to then ask to be President. Anyone remember President George Allen?

Newt was great in 1994. He has been great in the campaign. Would we get that Newt in 2012? He is fearless, and I like that. He is very easy to demonize, though, and conservatives don't have his back.

Seems like we are getting to where it's Cain for conservatives or we are stuck with another loser RINO. I'm fine with Cain, although I worry he might not be ready to hold steady to his positions in the face of onslaught. We will see. It is early still.

There was a big move by the Country Clubbers to get Christie to run. Maybe the counter move is to push hard to get the Gov of Virginia to run. He is great, no ifs ands or buts, and although it is normally too early for a first term governor to consider national office, these are not normal times. He would be great on the one issue that even conservatives waffle on, and that is illegal immigration.

I used to be a manager in a manfacturing organization. I made a point of getting to the floor almost every day. We call it “MWA”, managment by walking around. You get to see and hear what the workers’ ideas are, their frustrations and what could be done better. Listening is a key skill for managers, that experience was invaluable. And yes, the workers DO appreciate someone doing that. People want to do good work..and they will do even better when they feel they have someone in charge who has their back. Herman Cain is such a man.

I have always contended that ‘Suggestion boxes’ are one of the best assets any company can have.

Especially if you can sign yours in a code that, if used, can gain you some sort of monetary reward.

I like the part of the article where the one manager tries brown-nosing Cain back in 1984 by asking him if he was voting Jesse Jackson for president. After Cain’s answer, he probably had a Southwest “Need to Get Away” moment!

To paraphrase Craig Ferguson “It’ll be a Great Day for America” on the 20th of January 2013, when Herman Cain is sworn in as the first completely black president.

We’re just sooooo racist.
