I happens on Free Republic a lot. Heck, I used to do to to. Refer disparagingly towards California as the land of fruit and nuts, and so on.
I always wore my faults on my back in that respect, being from Massachusetts.
I had it given to me good, and rightfully so. I don’ t do it anymore.
With so much stuff going on in the country, I think it is very easy to transfer disagreement with a state to its citizens of that state. The East and West coasts are definitely more liberal states BUT not all of its people endorse the left leaning political ideology. I joke that every few months I hold a conservative meeting in my closet... and there is still space available. (( chuckle)). With Maryland, Montgomery, P.G., Baltimore have the huge majority of liberals; however, if you look at the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland... they are conservative.
