Cain Hopes His Iowa Speech Settled Abortion Issue
Christian Post ^ | October 23, 2011 | Anugrah Kumar

Posted on 10/23/2011 5:19:35 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Republican presidential candidate Cain hadn’t been in the state for two months, but he was able to connect with a majority of about 800 conservatives at the Des Moines event and reassure them that he was pro-life.

“In terms of preventing abortion on demand, I would not sign any legislation for government-funded abortion,” Bloomberg quoted the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO as telling the audience, as he sought to defend his Oct. 19 statement to CNN that although he opposed abortion,“it’s not the government’s role or anybody else’s role to make that decision.”

“I would not sign any legislation that in any way allowed the government to be involved in it,” said Cain, who was the first among the candidates to speak at the fall banquet. He also assured Iowa conservatives that he would strengthen all of the current laws that prevent abortion. “I believe that abortion should be clearly stated as illegal across this country and I would work to defund Planned Parenthood.”

After Cain’s speech, a majority stood up to applaud. When Bloomberg asked whether he thought he had put the matter behind him, Cain said, “I think I did.”

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum was among the first to attack Cain’s remarks after the CNN interview. “After acknowledging that he believes life begins at conception, Herman Cain went on to say it’s up to the individual to decide whether or not to kill an innocent unborn child,” he said in a statement. “That means that while he believes it is a life, he doesn’t consider it a life worth fighting for.”

The Iowa event was an opportunity that Cain was able to avail. Before Cain spoke to the gathering, activist Chuck Laudner from Rockford said, “The timing couldn’t have been better for these folks right here. … He’s [Cain] got a lot of time on the stage to explain it.” The life issue, he added, “is one of those rock-ribbed, cornerstone issues where we really don’t have gray area.”

But when Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s turn came to speak to the crowd, he jabbed Cain. “It is a liberal canard to say I am personally pro-life, but government should stay out of that decision,” CNN quoted Perry as saying. “That is not pro-life, that is pro-having-your-cake-and-eating-it-too,” he said, alluding to Cain’s remarks.

A day after his interview with Piers Morgan on CNN, Cain issued a statement explaining his remarks. “I was asked questions about abortion policy and the role of the President. I understood the thrust of the question to ask whether that I, as president, would simply ‘order’ people to not seek an abortion. My answer was focused on the role of the President. The President has no constitutional authority to order any such action by anyone. That was the point I was trying to convey.”

Joining Cain at the Saturday’s banquet were presidential candidates Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Santorum.

Former Massachusetts governor and perceived frontrunner Mitt Romney did not attend the banquet, causing organizers to wonder if he wasn’t comfortable with Christian conservatives.

FR Thread: Krauthammer sours on Herman Cain: ‘He is winging it’ ......"“[I] saw him on ‘Stossel’ on abortion — entirely incoherent,” Krauthammer said. “On one hand, ‘people ought to have choice.’ On the other hand, ‘life is sacred from the beginning and abortion ought to be illegal.’ This isn’t a complicated issue. It’s one or the other. It can’t be both."....

““I would not sign any legislation that in any way allowed the government to be involved in it,” said Cain,”

Wouldn’t a bill banning it be “involved in it”?

Cain wouldn’t sign a bill like that? Yup Herb, you cleared that right up./sarc

Read it an weep. Yet another smear attack blows up in the Perry/Romney attack machine's face.

http://www.lifenews.com/2011/10/21/national-right-to-life-herman-cain-is-fully-pro-life/

“Herman Cain’s pro-life,” David O’Steen, executive director of the National Right to Life Committee, told National Review. “He addressed our convention last June. We are quite confident in his pro-life position. When he ran in the primary for senate some years back … he ran as a pro-life candidate then in Georgia. We’ve known of him for a number of years, and he’s always taken a pro-life position.”

Cain ran his mouth on CNN and said things he didn't really believe—in other words he was bull crapping and made the front-runner bulls-eye on his back even bigger.

He has been solidly pro-life in every statement and interview before the CNN screw-up and solidly pro-life since.

Naturally, the elite GOP establishment RINOs (who are stupid enough to think Mitt can beat Obama) AND the Left (who are smart enough to know he can't beat Obama) want Romney to win so they collectively are out to destroy Cain-- commanding ALL their media-especially Fox News—to worry this one gaffe into an open festering sore.

One could compare it to the Perry “heartless” goof but Perry said what was both in his heart and on his record.

Inre to abortion, last night in Iowa Cain stated, "From conception, no abortions, no exceptions". A courageous thing to say for one seeking to become the GOP nominee, let alone POTUS. This will, unfortunately, cost him votes, especially amongst GOP women.
Nevertheless, Cain merits credit for being bold and straightforward on this issue.

Rick Perry, again last night, reiterated his position, that being abortion should be illegal except in cases involving rape, incest, or where the life of the mother is in jeopardy.
This is the exact same position Reagan took. Does it mean Perry and Reagan place less or even no value on a human conceived via rape or incest? Or that they, as imperfect human beings, couldn't imagine themselves in a role solely reserved for God?

Cain's position is very admirable. As a Roman-Catholic I agree with him. I also could not ever see myself urging, or even demanding, that a lady carry forth with a pregnancy which was the result of her being raped by her father, or a hideous thug who assaulted her in a dark alley.

When Bachmann was leading, the MSM attacked her.

When Perry was leading, the MSM attacked him.

Now that Cain is leading........

FReepers need to temper their support for their “favorite” candidate, and not be unwitting dupes for the MSM, liberals, RINOs and Romney.

[excerpt] “It is a liberal canard to say I am personally pro-life but government should stay out of that decision,” Perry said, without naming Cain. “If that is your view, you are not pro-life, you are pro having your cake and eating it too. We respect life, we respect life as a gift of God and what God has created, we should always work to protect.”

Cain fought back, telling the press Perry is resorting to tactics to discredit him.

“That is not true. He obviously did not take a look at the statement that I issued to clarify, I am pro-life. I have said it I don’t know how many times,” Cain said. “That is an attempt to try and discredit me.”

Cain launched a firestorm Wednesday evening when he suggested the government should not be involved in decisions on abortion.

“It’s not the government’s role or anybody’s role to make that decision,” Cain said Wednesday in an interview on CNN.

Cain attempted to stem the criticism today by simply explaining his position against abortion.

“Life from conception, no abortions, no exceptions,” Cain said. [end excerpt] Source

Told you before, as long as you continue to sleaze the other candidates instead of making the case FOR your guy, people are going to continue to punch back.

So how about your drop the fraudulent smear jobs and try making a case FOR Perry for a change?

Cain's lack of political experience causes him to express his view on issues in a sometimes confusing manor. While he is a good speaker, he unknowingly states things in a way that come out as a mixed message.

As a CEO what you say isn't judged on sound bites, in politics it can make or break your campaign.

He had the same problem on the 2nd amendmendment.

Mr. Cain needs to get a top notch political team to coach him ASAP.

Read it an weep. Yet another smear attack blows up in the Perry/Romney attack machine's face.

Perry has made no smear. Perry is pointing out deeds vs words. Yet in trying to "fix" what Cain has done you seek to tie Perry to Romney. Won't fly. And seeing that Cain has endorsed Romney in the past (and keeps giving him compliments and says he'd be a VP, pick Romney as his VP, but won't serve with Perry), wouldn't Cain/Romney be more appropriate?

Pro-Life, Marriage Groups Release 2012 GOP Scorecard “……Only three candidates – Perry, Santorum, and Bachmann – support every issue on the scorecard and have signed both pledges. The other candidates have either not signed one of the pledges or have not indicated support of one of the social conservative issues.”……

Rick Perry Gets A Grade on Abortion From Texas Pro-Life Groups “The big question in the Republican presidential race is whether or not Texas Gov. Rick Perry will throw his name in the hat for the GOP nomination to face pro-abortion president Barack Obama. If he does, Texas pro-life groups give him high marks.

“Governor Rick Perry has always championed the pro-life cause, tirelessly advocating for the sanctity of innocent human life in numerous ways,” Texas Right to Life executive director Elizabeth Graham tells LifeNews.com.

Governor Perry has worked alongside Texas Right to Life, helping shepherd our pro-life bills and eagerly supporting our measures,” Graham said. “As governor of Texas, he has intervened to stop anti-life legislation on a number of occasions, and he has helped clear obstacles when necessary.” ………….

Texas Gov. Rick Perry blasted pro-abortion President Barack Obama on pro-life issues "Perry said that, under Obama “our federal tax dollars can now be used to fund abortion all over the world. With the stroke of a pen, abortion essentially became a U.S. foreign export......."

”Perry has pleased pro-life advocates in Texas many times with signing pro-life legislation — most recently signing an ultrasound bill allowing women to see them before an abortion and hopefully changing their minds on it. He has been strongly supported by pro-life groups. Perry supported or signed into law the Women’s Right to Know Act and the Prenatal Protection Act in 2003, parental consent law in 2005, and funding for alternatives to abortions in 2007 and 2009."

Star Telegram Perry's push for the sonogram bill has fortified his long-standing ties to family values and pro-life groups but it has also made him a target from other circles.

"We would aggressively work to defeat him [Perry], of course," said Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, which describes itself as non-partisan but typically backs Democrats."

Margaret Carlson’s take on Perry She hoping he won’t run against Romney, so made an “ick” list about him including:

……”This year, Perry signed into law "emergency legislation" forcing a woman seeking an abortion to have a sonogram, after which she'll be told everything about the fetus. And after Texas's anti-sodomy law was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003, he supported the state legislature's refusal to remove the law from its books and called the justices "nine oligarchs in robes."………….

It's rich for the Romney people to hit Cain on this nonsense, since he told Ted Kennedy he was "pro-choice" in his pathetic Senate debate.

It's rich for the Perry people to hit Cain on this nonsense, since it's not like Cain told people who don't support a "woman's right to choose" that they "don't have a heart".

It's rich for Rick Santorum (he has no "people") to hit Cain on this nonsense, since he supported radical pro-abortion Arlen Specter over pro-life Pat Toomey in the PA Senate Primary, doing Karl Rove's bidding.

This is way over. Advantage Citizen Cain.

I agree with you and Herman Cain.

Unless you have been a victim of incest you don't have a clue how it changes you life forever.

By the grace of God I have healed many wounds but I certainly would have ended a life (my own) had I become pregnant by my father.

Even though they are both half liberal, Dick Morris and Karl Rove are great at coaching winners—if only Cain could hire them and then convince everyone he doesn’t share their politics—that it’s purely PR training and nothing else.

[excerpt] [Ralph] Reed said that after months of jumping on every media appearance offered, Cain and his staff must now limit his exposure and hammer home carefully honed talking points.

That’s a tall order for a man who has spent years as a conservative radio talk-show host, saying what was on his mind and scoring points for being provocative. [end excerpt] Source

I seem to be cooling on Cain because I am just not sure he has thought a lot of his stuff out. Maybe someone can help me with this...I will be retiring in 5 or so years. It seems with a national sales tax, my retirement income, which has already been taxed once, will be taxed again when I start using it to buy all my fishing supplies and the other necessities of retirement. Am I wrong here?

Good point and it needs to be kept before the American people during this campaign. Rick Santorum is starting to get on my nerves.
