” “In my opinion, Hoover’s biggest mistake was his enactment of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act.”

Hands down!

An excellent, excellent article! Sad & scary, but excellent.

And, of course, one has to go to a foreign newspaper to get the real skinny on our failing economy. Grrrr!

Smoot Hawley only affected 5% of the total economy. It couldn’t have been a huge influence on the economy... Its a straw man.

I miss my Grandpa Elmer to this day. The stories he told of The Great Depression were hard for me to grasp at the time, but then I lived through Carter and ‘got it,’ LOL! And NOW I cherish his stories like never before!

He had a wife, a newborn and an ill father in law to support during that time. He was NEVER without a job in all those years (10-12?) and usually worked three jobs to support them all. I remember he cleaned streets, delivered milk, drove taxi, collected paper and tin for cash; he did anything and everything to keep his family fed and housed and clothed.

I am amazingly GRATEFUL to have that mans blood running through my veins!

That’s why I never hesitate to tell Life and our my idiotic Government to, “Bring It!”

Boom & bust is a natural phenomenon. Literally. Look at any animal or plant population over time. Too many deer eat too much food, many deer starve, food stocks expand, etc, etc. It rains too much, it rains too little. Examples abound.

This is a cruel reality, but time tested over eons.

Socialists have the hubris to think they are so highly evolved, progressive, whatever you call it, that they know better. The can’t know everything. Impossible. So they fail, or become corrupted by power.

That picture at the beginning of the article is of a woman from Alabama. It resembles pictures of my farming relatives from that period. My dad said his family almost starved to death.

He worked picking cotton for my mother's father. (A sort of share-cropper thing, I think).

Smoot-Hawley preventing free-trade from exporting our factories to Japan, Germany and China enabled us to win WW II. We recovered from the depression. We would not have recovered if we lost WW II.

"That picture at the beginning of the article is of a woman from Alabama."

I recently watched a program about the photographer, Dorothea Lange and she shot the photo called "Migrant Mother" in California. The woman wasn't identified, but years later it came out that she was originally from Oklahoma (I think she was actually born on the Cherokee reservation there).

All the evidence supports your claim and I have always thought she was from Oklahoma too until a couple years ago when I'm sure I read that she was from Alabama...caught my attention because I am too.

Regardless, the evidence prevails...thanks for the correction.
