The Occupy Wall Street movement has had an incredible ascendency over the last few weeks. But despite its ambiguous aims one has to wonder how this movement would measure up with other similar movements throughout history.
On Rush Limbaughs Wednesday show, fill-in host Mark Steyn said he has low regard for Occupy Wall Street not necessarily because it is a left-wing movement, but, he explained, because it is an imported movement.
Im not sure how many people know this, but this whole thing this is the most pathetic revolution in history, Steyn said. [French revolutionary] Robespierre would have no time for these guys, Lenin would have no time for these guys, Mao would have no time for these guys these big sloth demonstrations, the big sloth movement. Its not even American this whole thing was cooked up by the Vancouver-based Adbusters Media Foundation.

Mark Steyn ... you are wicked brilliant and hilarious!
Steyn ping.
OWS is basically finished. You will hear no news going forward.
The Left have taken these event as far as it could, and OWS are becoming an embarrassment to the Left. The thrill is gone.
The MSM will simply stop covering these events. Then whoever remains after a few more days will simply get cleaned up by the NYPD without any publicity.
Wouldn’t matter if it was organized, and payed for, by Communist Chaina.
If they have the proper permits, are here legally, and do not break any laws..who cares?
What should outrage people the most, in my nots so humble oppinion, is the Democrat “leadership” gives it two thumbs up.
But we have always imported insanity from Canada
(see: Morissette, Alanis)
I think OWS will not disappear but there will be attempts to morph it into a more mainstream movement to appeal to independents. “We’ll regulate bank fees and credit card interest, force them to negotiate down on your mortgage principal, introduce student debt forgiveness programs”, etc.
In a country with tens of millions up to their eyeballs in hock it will have wide appeal.
Right... AND the MSM (our supposed ‘unbiased’ watchdogs) has ‘sided’ with the OWS protesters (and others) as well.
The things this author observes, are what the MSM ought to be researching and exposing as well!!!
Instead, the MSM behaves as if everything about the OWS mob is perfectly legitimate, necessary and relevant
These kids are irresponsible idlers and wastrels. They are responsible for NOTHING.
It’s easy to criticize when you are not, yourself, responsible for anything.
They all need to get up off their lazy a%$es and grow up!!
Steyn is a Canadian. I like his writings but I’ve always wondered why he makes it sound like he’s a U.S. citizen.
*shrug* He’s a Canadian citizen, but he’s also an American resident writing largely for American periodicals and appearing in American media (e.g. Hewitt, Limbaugh). Know thine audience, I guess.
Obviously, despite the screen name, you're not that familiar with Steyn.
He is Canadian-born, but he is now an American citizen.
And he writes for the worldwide media -- with outlets in Canada, the UK, Israel and Australia, besides the U.S.
Perhaps you're right. When was he naturalized? Only a few years ago, he identified himself as a Canadian citizen who didn't believe in dual citizenship (Link), and there's nothing on SteynOnline identifying him as anything other than a Canadian living in New Hampshire.
In my defense, here is an item from this year's NRO -- The Burden of Citizenship. Steyn's use of pronouns in the excerpt at least implies that he is a "documented" American citizen.
However, the excerpt is from an April, 2006 article for the Orange County Register.
And the undated National Post article you've linked to includes a question about "Prime Minister Harper" -- which dates it as 2006 or later. And, at the time, Steyn is claiming unequivocally that he is a Canadian citizen. Beyond the above, I can't seem to find any evidence of U.S. citizenship on the web, but I swear I have heard Steyn roundly attack the U.S. immigration system and bureaucracy -- based on his own and his wife's experiences.
Perhaps all of this had to do with obtaining a 'green card', but that's not the way I remember it.
Nonetheless, you are clearly the winner of Round One and I apologize for my misplaced certitude.
