Cap-and-trade emissions scheme expected to be approved by California

California Air Resources Board due to vote on the adoption of first US mandatory cap-and-trade emissions scheme...

the California Air Resources Board was due to vote on Thursday afternoon on the adoption of an emissions trading scheme.

"This is the final yes: we are going to move forward with California," said Gary Gero, president of the Climate Action Reserve, a voluntary registry.

The decision was seen to be significant because California accounts for about 13% of the world economy, and the state has a history of being the leader on environmental initiatives.

"California can drive national action," Gero said.

The decision comes at a time when Republican leaders in the rest of the US are denying the existence of man-made climate change.

In Washington, a Republican-controlled Congress is cutting budgets and rolling back environmental protections.

Meanwhile, a number of states have defected from regional – and voluntary – carbon trading systems.

You beat me to it.

I was going to write: Final nail in the coffin of the once great golden state alert.

There, I did it. But I don’t feel much better.

Ah yes, if the vortex of a financial whirlpool is your gig, follow the leader...California.

California, accounting for 13% of the worlds economy and about 50% of it's debt!

If only this were true. But the Guardian has never let facts get in the way of a good story.

“California can drive national action,” Gero said.

That should read “California can drive over a cliff.”

I believe it is about 13% of the U.S. economy, not the world economy.

One good-sized brushfire will wipe out whatever “carbon savings” these idiots get from their cap and trade regime. And “green energy” makes wildfires more likely, and harder to fight (transmission lines and windmill accidents).

The greatest enemy the environment has is “environmentalists”.

Can you hear all that money being sucked out California as they more dependent on foreign old as well as foreign CO2 credits. And they well want the rest of the States to bail them out for their stupidity. Way to go California shoot yourself in the foot again and we are not going to bail you out.

Yeah, 'voluntary' as in the memo from the boss:

Attendance at Friday's meeting is not mandatory but we will see you there, won't we?
