The GOP could face a revolt from within its tea party grassroots base if it nominates an establishment candidate without true conservative, anti-big government values, one of Americas leading conservative pundits tells Newsmax.TV in an exclusive interview.
Specifically, columnist and former Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan told Newsmax that the nomination of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the architect of a state insurance plan that many say inspired Obamacare, could prompt the tea party movement to form a third party.
Its a real possibility because the tea party folks and the Republican conservatives and social conservatives and others are very apprehensive of Mitt Romney and they dont feel he is really one of us, Buchanan told Newsmax.
Theyve got reason for that feeling and that sentiment but if they do that, if, for example they persuaded Ron Paul to run on a third party ticket, Barack Obama would be easily re-elected, he added.
Buchanan would certainly know. A former aide to President Ronald Reagan, he was one of the first conservative commentators to hold a prominent job as a TV commentator and syndicated columnist in the mainstream media.
From 1966 through 1974, Buchanan was an assistant to Richard Nixon, and from 1985 to 1987, White House Director of Communications for Reagan.
Buchanan ran twice for the Republican nomination for president and then in 2000 ran for the White House on the Reform Party ticket. He said he can see a third party candidate emerging in 2012 if Mitt Romney gets the GOP nod.
Of the current Republican candidates he said, Certainly Michele Bachmann is one of us. I think Rick Perry is. I think Herman Cain is. If you are talking about a more traditional conservative certainly I would put Santorum in there.

Pat Buchanan was on Hannity the other day. Is Hannity wrong, too?
By the way, let’s be truthful about what Buchanan wrote:
Are liberals anti-WASP?
May 13, 2010
If Kagan is confirmed, the Court will consist of three Jews and six Catholics (who represent not quite a fourth of the country), but not a single Protestant, though Protestants remain half the nation and our founding faith.

Hannity has all sorts of anti-semites on his show.
Obama and Al Sharpton, for example.
Sorry I upset you about Sonderkommando Buchanan. Guess I won’t get invited to the White Power meeting.
You’re a troll.
So what you are saying is that you WILL vote for Romney.
What's the Key Goal Right Now?
You know, the last-choice Romneybots can become converts of a lack-of-long-term vision/short-sighted goal. If RINO Romney chases the base of the party out of the GOP, then actually the goal right now should be to keep the GOP from becoming the next extinct Whig party!
What would it matter for Romney to win the nomination, lose the election, and leave the GOP in tatters for 2014 & 2016?
Besides, Romney won't win. Many Christians won't vote for him...
...both for flip-flopping social issues reasons
...& --for some reason -- they tend to shrink from voting for people who think they are a would-be god.
You might not have an issue with voting for people who think they are a literal "god-in-embryo" (fave term of some Mormon leaders to describe themselves), but I do. (I tend not to vote for idolaters who steal God's glory by trying to share worship of Him).
And, after the MSM gets done with Romney, were he to win the primaries, many independents would steer way clear as well. He is not a viable candidate. Why waste my vote on a losing candidate while doing simultaneous damage to my conscience?
And, as mentioned above, he would permanently ruin the GOP. Those who have short-term vision and can't see past Obama should know that the base will largely "walk" if the RINOs take over the GOP. Whigism -- extinction -- will be the way of the GOP. It will go by the wayside. Permanently. I will simply walk away from the GOP and not look back.
So what to do?
#1: There's never only a "binary" choice. (There's ALWAYS a third-party vote if the GOP slits its own throat...or aren't you aware that the Whigs are no longer around & a new party called the GOP arose in the mid-1850s?)
#2 We need peripheral vision...elsewise, if we're only beholden to the current campaign, people would vote for a Hitler type in a nanosecond if a worst evil candidate was running vs. him.
Take the biggest "loser" of a GOP candidate...say a pro-abort, pro-national healthcare, pro-homosexual candidate. Guess what? If you vote for such a candidate, you've wasted your vote. He will lose. Voting for a losing candidate -- even by people who think in your terms -- is indeed a wasted vote...which I thought was anathema to FREEPERS like you.
(And so what if Romney can garner up to 10% or so more than a third-party candidate? If you lose a football game, 46-29, why is that so much better than losing a football game 46-16 or 46-19?)
Too many GOP FREEPERS are willing to waste their vote and singe their conscience
So again: Why would you waste your vote on a candidate you know will lose -- and taint your convictions & conscience in the process? And stab the GOP party in the back at the same time?
As for voting for the lesser evil, No. I wouldn't vote for Hitler in the 1930s Germany even if he were running vs. the anti-Christ.
...there's a clear line in the sand. When the wife of a 40-yo marriage no longer sits in the middle portion of the seat of a pick-up truck, who moved?
We're not pushing the exit button; if the GOP decides to do that by electing Romney, they've exited and are threatening the entire party with Whigism.
At that point, should it occur, the GOP needs to clearly understand the true meaning of a "wasted vote."
If he were the nominee ONLY.
I support Cain, so long as he's in the running.
Get this straight.. I don't like Romney. But if he's the only one standing vs. another four years of Obama, I see Romney as the only choice. We can ruminate all we want about making a statement by voting indie, but that doesn't extricate Obama from the White House.
I was laid off from my job earlier this year because of 0bama's policies, as were millions more Americans.
Four more years of that nefarious marxist will irreparably damage this country. He's GOT to go next November.
What I`m saying is I`m voting AGAINST Obama.
“What I`m saying is I`m voting AGAINST Obama.”
So am I.
But I won’t be voting Romney.
Are you saying the only way to vote against Obama is to vote for the Republican?
You can vote for whomever you wish, but third parties dividing the GOP vote guarantee Obama`s reelection. And you know that`s the case....I don`t have to convince you of that.
Yeah, me, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Jonah Goldber, and William F. Buckley are all trolls because we agree that Pat Buchananon has a problem with the JOoooooooos.
Sorry, to insult whittle Herr FrankenFuher Buchanan.
TROLL ALERT!
“I find it impossible to defend Pat Buchanan against the charge that what he did and said during the period under examination amounted to anti-Semitism.”
— William F. Buckley, Jr, National Review, 1991
Troll Alert!
“9/11 was a direct consequence of the United States supporting Israel.”
Pat Buchanan, September 30, 2002 (said on Chris Matthews’s Hardball)
“the SS troops buried at Bitburg were “victims just as surely as the victims in the concentration camps.” (New York Times, 5/16/85; New Republic, 1/22/96)
Writing of “group fantasies of martyrdom,” Buchanan challenged the historical record that thousands of Jews were gassed to death by diesel exhaust at Treblinka: “Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody.” (New Republic, 10/22/90) Buchanan’s columns have run in the Liberty Lobby’s Spotlight, the German-American National PAC newsletter and other publications that claim Nazi death camps are a Zionist concoction.
Another troll alert. This is supposed to be a discussion of a 3rd party run.
