To All:

It broke my heart to see the animals had to be put down, but knowing that Jack Hanna said it was unavoidable we here in Ohio take that to heart. We know how much Jack hurt from the loss of the animals, but they did what they had to do. Jack is getting threats from nut cases who do not know how much Jack is loved and trusted here in Ohio.

Jack is working with Gov. Kasich to get the law changed so this does NOT happen again! With Jack Hannah’s help, you can bet it will be done!

From my understanding when the LEO arrived at the farm there were several animals being aggressive with the owners body. Moreover, they noticed many of the animals all over the farm out of their cages. At that point the LEO had no other choice but to shoot to kill the animals.

I know one big cat made it to the freeway which is close by and it was hit by a car on the freeway. I believe it was interstate 70. Moreover, they found one of the bears running towards the same freeway and they had to shoot it before it when on the interstate. I am 60 miles away and it made me very uneasy knowing they were on the loose. Where my hubby works (which was closer out in the open) were all put on alert and on the lookout. Just so sad it had to come to this.

Here is a link if you want to read up on it.

Exactly!

One or two animals, I can buy the dart gun argument, if the animals aren't an immediate threat.

You couldn't dart 35 big cats successfully in a populated area without taking enormous risk.

Well there you go...another “score” for the IRS.

Where is Ron Paul when you “need” him...?

hey killed about twenty of the anmals upon arrival, so not two many left.

Huh? That left 30, running around a populated area.

It started at 5:30 PM Tuesday. And there were never any giraffes. The first call was for a bear and a lion.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

Sam Kopchak Jr. was heading to the small pasture on his property to bring in his horse for the night when he noticed horses on the adjoining property running as though they were scared.

Then his own horse became skittish.

First he spied what he figured was the cause of the horses’ distress: a lone black bear in the neighboring field.

He calmed his own horse and said he wasn’t terribly concerned because the black bear was pretty far away.

Then he saw a huge male lion about 30 feet away on the other side of the simple wire fence that divided his property from his neighbor’s.

Kopchak, 64, said he carefully — but quickly — led his horse toward the barn. As he stepped inside, he looked back.

That’s when he saw a tiger chasing the horses next door and a lioness pacing the fence line.

Kopchak slammed the barn door shut, pulled out his cellphone and called his mother.

“I told her, ‘We’ve got a serious problem. Call 911. All the animals are out.’  ”

Sheriff's deputies shot 48 animals — including 18 rare Bengal tigers and 17 lions

Absolutely necessary - these animals could easily have killed people. What wasn't necessary was the need for some idiot in Ohio to keep dangerous exotic animals. The big cats almost certainly were inbred, weren't pure-blooded and served no purpose in keeping the species alive. Apparently the guy also turned loose leopards, baboons, bears, wolves - all perfectly capable of seriously harming or killing any human they encountered. Before the owner shot himself, he was apparently bitten in the head by one of the tigers he freed - hopefully no one else will get hurt.

Ownership of exotic animals by private citizens who have no qualifications to care for them responsibly is one of the few instances in which I support government bans. Unless you own a zoo with excellent security including camera monitoring, lots of space, enclosures which can not be opened without cooperation by several zoo officials, and a trained, highly educated staff with expertise on the care and maintenance of dangerous big cats, you don't need to own a lion or tiger.

I will simply say that you are misinformed and leave it at that.

In the U.S., lions, tigers and wolves kept by private citizens far outnumber the ones in zoos. Somthing like 8,000 privatley kept lions and tigers.

That right there is the crux of the problem. I detest government intrusion as much as any freedom loving American but that is a situation where import laws need to be stricter.

But the time line was as I gave you many of the animals were dead long before the call went to the zoo. And it was a hell of a long time before dark. The report was that the main compound had a high fence around it, that is what I read. But it seems more than one person is trying to rewrite the chain of events. Wonder why.

No, it wasn't. It was 5:30 PM. Sunset was at 6:42. It was a dark day and pouring rain.

I live here, dude. I know what I'm talking about.

So they were killing the animals and the zoo did not show up until the next day, ok , the news just reported the old boy owed the IRS $ 70,000. Guess the animals belongs to the IRS now.

He had money troubles and the IRS was after him.

Betcha they never would have pulled a Ruby Ridge on him with 35 lions and tigers on the premises

How many times do you need it spelled out by those of us who live here?

It started on Tuesday. The first calls came in at 5:30 PM. It was pouring rain and dark. Sunset was at 6:42. It was pitch black by 7:15. The zoo staff, including Jack Hanna were there by 8:00 PM.

I watched it live on local TV.

Who cares about the IRS? The ATF sent him to prison. They tend to frown upon hundreds of guns with no serial numbers.

You’re right, they probably weren’t Barney Fifes and they probably didn’t really want to kill those animals. I just imagined it that way when I saw the disturbing photo of the results of the slaughter.

Ultimately, the dead guy is to blame. Horrible.

A couple of dead cows and the animals would have been eating until the zoo people got there.

Of course, every police department in the country has a bunch of cows out back, just in case some nut might set free 35 big cats in the area.

I saw a video yesterday of Mr. Hanna via CNN and said the right thing had to be done and with so many animals you would have to have quick thinking big time as well.

As a person who also loves animals, this is never ever at any time an easy decision to begin with, but if the public with any domestic animals, farm and non farm were put into danger, that is the last thing they need to have happen.

You got that right, what that guy did by freeing those wild animals is animal abuse at its worse, because it was sending them to their deaths.

Also, ever since what had happened to that woman who was nearly killed by that chimp that went berserk a few years back in CT, and it went national, in regards to wild animals from other parts of the world, there is less tolerance for exotic wild animals who go on the loose.
