What can the US do about Cuban oil drilling?

It's bad enough that some public officials have no second thoughts about drilling for oil off Florida's coastline.

Now Floridians have to be concerned about Cuban drilling, which could be as close at 50 miles from the Florida Keys. A massive Chinese-built rig is expected to begin drilling the first well off Cuba in January.

And what happens if oil drilling in Cuban waters produces a major spill that heads towards Florida's shores? You don't really want to know.

1) The rig is not Cuban, it is an assett of an Italian company, SAIPEM
2) If you are high enough above a Florida beach (~1 000m), and in possession of some fine binoculars, with exceptional visibility, you may be able to see said rig.

I haven’t found reference to drilling outside of EEZ, and I have looked. I’m not sure if the UN has some attempted jurisdiction of it.

Thank you. Maybe it isn’t feasible due to the depth of the sea. But I’m sure if it became an economically viable activity some parasite sovereign entity would try to take their piece. Just like the Mob!

Both the Chinese and Cubans have miserable environmental records and if there was a spill my bet is they would do little or nothing to clean up the mess. This is the same area that Obama has blocked US companies from drilling because of environmental concerns.

Hard for me to believe that everyone is wrong. At least buy form majority American owned companies and not form Chavez or Castro.

Left it to the Sun-Sentinel to write about the Cuban rigs without saying a peep about the rigs but rather whines that the US isn’t doing enough to stop a potential spill.

Hard for me to believe that everyone is wrong.

Each time I've seen it, it was same the outdated and false email reposted here. Each time it included names of companies that no longer existed.

If you find one you think you believe, post it up. I'll point you to the import data for companies on the list.

I saw an industry report that I can't find saying among other things that I think it was Citco that was Venezuela oil. I saw companies production and but my computer crashed and I don't have the favorites on this one. I checked Oil drum website and a couple others but no luck yet. No E-mail here.

Oil companies (like exxon) don't divide their oil up, since its fungible, they can mix, substitute, do whatever they want. I'm not sure its possible to do a "buy american" with gasoline, because of the way that industry works with petrolium as a commodity.

I saw a list of non American oil companies like Citco which is Venezuelan so I stay away form that. There are some local refineries that pick up crude oil on the pipelines and I am so far form the coast that there probably isn't any foreign oil but I still like buy American.

Citgo is owned by PDVSA which is a government entity of Venezuela (like PEMEX in Mexico).

Most all your gasoline is going to be from domestic sources. However, you are still pipeline connected to Gulf Coast Refineries that receive imported oil. They make up the difference between shortages refined in that part of the country.

Most of the oil refined in that part of the country is going to come from your area and to the North, except in Southeast Colorada where the Texas Panhandle supplies some.
