Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Fights Union Over Longer School Day

CHICAGO – After lobbying in parking lots, allegations of vote manipulation and a shouting match that ended with a hug, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has persuaded just 13 out of hundreds of Chicago schools to break with their union and accept cash in exchange for lengthening the school day for the city's students.

But the teachers union has cried foul and wants the schools to be forced to return to their old schedules. The Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board will take up the issue Thursday when it considers a union appeal to block the longer school day from taking effect pending a hearing in December over allegations of unfair labor practices.

The union would never be happy even if you hung them with new rope.

Illinois is bankrupt, Chicago is the reason, plus the crooks who come out of Chicago to inhabit the capitol building in Springfield. Why on earth would they even suggest something like this that will COST even more money that the state does NOT have??

THis sounds staged. ONe of those deals where they both “compromise” ending up with exactly what they wanted in the first place?
Emanuel gets to look like a tough guy while at the same time appearing fair.

This is a no win to me. The dem base might love it, but no way I want my child spending his life in school. Chicago schools?

At one time in my life one of my children had to spend a longer day out of the house. It played havoc with us, disrupted the family, and I can tell you it did nothing for his education. In fact, it’s why I began homeschooling. Took me months to undo the mess public education made.

Yeah, teachers want to keep the kid as dumb as can be. Not much else expected from teacher with a IQ that is so low it cannot be calculated.

Will the flea baggers be hired to protest Rham as they did Walker?

Lengthening the school day will not increase the capabilities of the system to impart knowledge or skills to the inmates.

I was three years in grammar school in a private school in Istanbul. The tuition was paid by the government for the progeny of military and diplomatic personnel and was paid by parents of certain business people. The school day was from 0900 to 1500 hrs. There was one hour for lunch and there were two 15 minute recesses. I learned more history, math geography, and English in 2nd through 4th grades than I even saw again before high school in the US. We had dumb kids and bright kids. The dumb kids made bad grades. They went back to the USA with, again, more knowledge and skills than they could get in American public schools before high school.

It became known that kids were being penalized in the US because they had not read Dick and Jane or Alice and Jerry. One day the students were all sent out on the playground in pairs, each pair with a stack of the complete sets of both where we read them all to each other. We got checked off as having read them and all felt silly reading such baby stuff. In class and for homework we were reading Moby Dick without Jane in third grade.

He broke his own rules.

He didn’t wait for a crisis to take advantage of.

I agree! What good does it do for kids to spend more time in the failing government school system? This only appeals to parents who use the schools for “free” daycare.
